Whoa! I learned so much from this book!How have I never read this book before? I'm a fourth grade teacher and we did a STEM project where we had to make a popcorn container. This seemed like a good book to read before the unit but oh man, it applied to our curriculum and I love that it included the characters researching in the book.I guarantee you will learn something from this book too! Plus Tomie de Paola is amazing so what are you waiting for? Click buy!
My kids (ages 3 and 1) *love* this book!! I read it over and over to them.I was hoping this book would be more of a handbook, since we just started growing our own popcorn. At first glance, I thought it might have too many words to keep my kids engaged; I'm glad I was wrong. They love it.There are two methods (at the very end) of popping corn, too.We may have to purchase another copy of this book. Ours has been very loved.
Great book from when I grew up. My son (3 years old) really enjoys it. Even though it is several decades old, it has aged well in terms of relevance (although maybe they would be looking it up on Wikipedia instead of a printed encyclopedia). The illustrations are excellent as is the case with all Tomie de Paola books. The favorite is probably the images of the tiny "demon" inside the popcorn kernal, making it explode.
I enjoyed the book and the history of the different popcorn.I bought several for children on my bus as birthday gifts with a bag of popcorn.The only thing I didn't like was the children in the book making the popcorn over the stove.I would have preferred an adult for that.
I love the few bits of history mentioned in this book and it respects the child's intellect, instead of talking down to them. The illustrations also entertained and encouraged my imagination. As an adult reading to a child, I also have to be interested in the book. This book encourages children to read - and excellent for children who enjoy food. Have more of Tomie dePaola's books on my Wishlist and gift list!
I just love popcorn. I felt a little silly buying this book for myself because I'm a grown woman and don't have kids, but I really love popcorn! It comes with two very simple recipes at the end and the presentation of facts is fun. Easy informative read to pair with a learning activity some day!
I used this book to go along with a unit on how matter changes. We had made homemade butter a few days before to show that liquid could change. The book told us several things that even the teachers did not know. We read the book then popped popcorn. This was a science/life skills lesson.
