Definitely would recommend to younger girls and teens! But as a sophomore in college, I found that the material was a little beneath me. I kind of knew when I ordered the book, but being a longtime Carrie fan I just had to see what she came up with. Not to say that it doesn't contain many nuggets of wisdom. But I'm at the age where I've already come to accept many of the principles Carrie describes so it didn't feel as poignant. Although I did find myself nodding in agreement and totally laughing out loud at certain points, so I'm pleased. Also, I love the design of this book. Super cute :)

It was a birthday gift for my niece. She wanted the European edition. I couldn't believe it but I found it on Amazon and it was ship from London and arrived just in time for her birthday. She very happy and surprise I actually found the book. So that makes me a great uncle forever.

Great book. My daughter couldn't stop reading it.

Carrie Hope Fletcher!!!!!! This book is great and she is such a talented writer!!

This is a book that everyone should read : teens, young adults, everyone.Carrie makes life seem elegant and beautiful with her bright and optimistic outlook.

I could have used this as a teen but in my late twenties I found myself skimming quite a bit. I love her YouTube channel but this isn't the book for me.

My daughter loves this , she's 19 years old !

My child love this book.

Torn between three stars and four, and well aware that Amazon rates three stars as 'critical'. First the praise. This is a readable, comprehensive and persuasive assessment of risks facing current society. It draws heavily on current and projected science and technology. My disappointments are (i) its prescriptions are platitudinous and (ii) the author ventures way outside his area of very considerable expertise. I have no reason to doubt that his writing is well informed, but it seems to waste his expertise. This could have been undertaken equally well by an allround scientific journalist. Rees wrote a true masterpiece of popular science "Just Six Numbers" in which his field of expertise is superbly explained to the lay reader. If he wanted to venture again into popular science, concentration on his own field would have been much more productive.

Buy it. This is a thoughtful, balanced, riveting, easy-to-read book. I saw Martin Rees on WTTW's Chicago Tonight (the best thing on television in Chicago each weeknight at 7pm) and thought I'd have a look at his book. I couldn't put it down - very interesting.

This book is typical of an apocalyptic and pessimistic tendency in western culture. I feel like I am trapped in a hospital room with another patient constantly talking about how we are going to probably die from pneumonia or a virus or from the non-organic hospital food. The interesting discussions in the astronomy section, his science, are not worth the ride, and would have made a better book. Millions of us may die of a pandemic, a terrorist may set off a nuclear bomb in Times square, and I may get run over tomorrow cutting across the street in Prague. You cannot deal with tomorrow by living in fear today.

I was frankly appalled by the lack of research or insight that went into writing this book, which is essentially an extended essay. You can envision Rees settling into an aimchair with his laptop to rattle off some things on his mind, and decided to call it a book. Most of the text isn't even about "the future" or "prospects," it's just a description of the status quo in certain areas of relevance to the future - to the point that the discussion of the future is squeezed to insignificance. In areas where I have expertise I can see how basic his thinking is, just talking about things off the top of his head that he's picked up along the way, but aren't based on much beyond general reading. The only areas of some interest are those where he, as an astronomer, has expertise.

You too could be master of a Cambridge College, President of the Royal Society, and a peer of the realm, if you had the superb intelligence, extraordinarily wide knowledge and interests, and the profound humanity of Martin Rees. For the rest of us, we can attempt to make up for our deficiencies by readings his books - especially the latest - On the Future: Prospects for Humanity.

On The Future contains more well-informed opinion, more wisdom and more stimulating ideas than any other book I have read about the future waiting for our children and grandchildren. I gave copies to each of my grandchildren because I want them to understand and ponder the opportunities and dangers ahead. To my knowledge, no other author presents the future in more compelling terms than Martin Rees.John Dickey

I gobbled this one up right away and will probably read it again. Rees is a good writer and he clearly knows the material. I'd have liked more details about potential catastrophes and more discussion of "what if" scenarios, but for a general audience, this was interesting.

An intelligent author.

#260,457 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Many articles and books about climate change are thought-experiments on what "could' work IF we have the will, IF we cut back drastically on energy use, etc. This book is a refreshing change from those usual ways of writing and thinking about climate change. In this book, the authors look at what strategies have actually worked to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Germany's high-renewables plan gets lots of publicity, but hasn't worked very well to reduce emissions. Countries like Sweden that use everything (renewables, hydro and nuclear) have lowered their emissions far more effectively. This book is not about what "could" work if all the stars are in the right order, but rather about what "has" worked and can work again. This book is well researched and easy to read. I recommend it highly.

The policy proposal: replace fossil fuels and especially coal with nuclear power - 5 stars. The book: 3 Stars. Shallow. The authors studiously avoid educating the reader beyond the bare minimum to get their point across. There is minimal discussion of the nuclear fuel cycle - uranium mining, refining, enrichment, or recycling. Nor do they discuss how much CO2 nuclear fuel manufacturing produces. It’s not zero, and should figure in their calculations. They are too dismissive of the success of the anti-nuclear movement in the 80’s. The cap-and-trade vs. carbon tax discussion is not at the depth expected for a book of this length (or price, frankly). Anyone with a technical bent will be sorely disappointed; ten minutes on Wikipedia will teach you more about the why’s and how’s of Fourth Generation reactors than this whole book. The best thing about this book is the references. The text is well sourced and many of the sources are available online. Also they do make their case, both in terms of the policy and its feasibility. However, it could be a much better book.

Sweden calls it karnkraft. Karnkraft is how Sweden became the country with the most nuclear power per person in the world. As Goldstein, a poli sic guy from AU and Qvist, an engineer from Sweden show, if you’re going to remain fervently “no nuclear,” then just accept your changing climate with grace, and in silence. The book is light and breezy, sort of an extended magazine article, but it educates accurately. You may hate the conclusions but it’s tough to rebut them. They’re right. As a professor who has taught climate change law and policy I can tell you that many people don’t want the truth. In the words of Jack Nicholson, “you can’t handle the truth.” But the truth won’t change on you, so this book will permit you to know the truth, even if you don’t want to.

As a scientist who spends a lot of time (and my own money) going around the country to talk about global warming (see globalwarmingprimer.com/tour) and how we can solve it, as well as having written a book on the topic, I already was well aware of the climate benefits of nuclear energy and why it must be considered as one of the three major technologies that we have at our disposal to solve the problem of global warming (the other two being renewables and efficiency). Even so, I learned a lot from this book, particularly about the great progress in nuclear technology that has already been made in many countries around the world. The book also does a great job of focusing on what I believe to be the most important message: Moving away from fossil fuels will NOT hurt our economy, because when you look at the true costs of fossil fuels -- including the damages they cause to health and security -- you find that they are far more expensive than other technologies, including nuclear. Therefore, a rapid transition to non-carbon fuel sources would not only save our environment, but would actually benefit our economy because we'd be getting just as much or more energy for less total cost. It's win-win all around. The book also points out that the key to getting this done is to build the true costs of fossil fuels into their actual price, which is best done through a carbon tax. Think about the world you want for your kids and grandkids, and you'll be convinced that we need a carbon tax now, so that other fuel sources -- including nuclear -- can compete on a level playing field.

I wish this book had taken its mission more seriously, because the topic is of immense importance: is nuclear energy the only realistic path toward a carbon-free energy paradigm? Unfortunately, the authors utterly fail to advance their case.Rather than seriously address legitimate safety concerns about nuclear power, Goldstein and Qvist engage in partisan attacks against critics by mischaracterizing them as being categorically uninformed about the realities of nuclear power. Chernobyl? User error and bad design. Three Mile Island? A harmless accident unfairly hyped by the sensational-loving press and Hollywood. Fukushima? A natural disaster masquerading as a nuclear incident. Sad the Japanese overreacted by moving away from nuclear energy altogether. And did we mention how many people die each year breathing pollutants caused by burning coal? This kind of facile analysis utterly fails to grapple with the realities of nuclear energy. Dismissing critics as being either in thrall to the sensationalist press, or being hopelessly trapped by their own tin-foil hats does a disservice to those with legitimate concerns about the safety of nuclear power. The fact that one of the authors is, himself, a consultant to the nuclear power industry suggests that this book is more a work of marketing than serious public discourse.

A realistic plan to decarbonize fast enough to avoid catastrophic climate collapse. And do so without new taxes.Or enforced austerity.Based on existing technolgoy. Without shutting the door on better technology.Being honest about the safest way to create energy known to mankind. We will save 3.5 million lives per year when we shut down fossil fuel use. This book shows how to start saving those lives as soon as possible.
