Have you ever worked with anyone who is living with autism? Over the years I have been in situations where I have interacted professionally and informally with folks who have some form of autism, but I have never looked into this subject. Therefore, recently, I decided it was time to look below the surface and find out more. Temple Grandin's 240 page paperback, "The Autistic Brain: Thinking Across the Spectrum" was the first resource I nabbed, and how grateful I am to have picked it up. Grandin, a professor of animal science at Colorado State University and accomplished author speaks on autism from the inside out. The book is her story dancing together with the life-stories of many others who live with autism."The Autistic Brain" is, surprisingly, an easy read. In spite of the fairly technical chapters on brain formation and functionality, and the different ways autistics think (word-fact, picture or pattern), the author keeps the reader's attention focused and flowing. Like a trail guide at a national park, she walks the person who is reading on the right track, moving to the side on occasion to point out significant scenery, and then resuming the trek further along to trail's destination. Grandin tackles nature and nurture in graceful ways that give hope and insight both to those who are living with autism and those who live around autistics. As the author puts it, "Neuroanatomy isn't destiny. Neither is genetics. They don't define who you will be. But they do define who you might be. They define who you can be" (174)."The Autistic Brain" is a valuable and lucid asset. This book will benefit anyone with autism, giving them a sense of anticipation. It also should be in the hands of parents who have children (young, teen or adult) coping with this neurological irregularity, to encourage them and aid them as they support and love their child. I gladly recommend the book.

This book is super fascinating! My grandson is high functioning autistic and after reading this book I now suspect my youngest son is also.. but not ever officially "diagnosed" as such. What I like is that the Temple Grandin walks you through a lot of the historical science of autism and then her questions and theories are the same ones that jumped out at me as I was reading it... then she dives into more research that she has uncovered in trying to answer those questions. We don't know enough about autism today and even if you don't know someone with autism, what I thought was so fascinating is learning more about how the brain works & why we all have different strengths & weaknesses. If we figure out more about autism it will undoubtedly shed a lot of light on the rest of us with the 'average' ho-hum brains! I will re-read this one again - High recommend! Great book and well written.

When I began reading this book I wasn't sure it would have much application to me as an educator of children with autism, but boy was I wrong! This book is a must-read for those who have loved ones on the spectrum or who are, themselves, on the spectrum. Temple opened my mind to new ways to teach my kiddos by focusing on their individual strengths. I even had the honor of meeting her at a book signing in my city recently.

Love Temple! Ever since I watched her movie about 7 years ago I have become such a fan! Until I had a child of my own 3 years ago and he was diagnosed with ASD I started to read more of her books about autism. She is such an inspiration to parents and so knowledgeable. This book is a must have for anyone who has ASD, is a caregiver, teacher, parent, family member, or has contact with anyone with ASD. Temple covers everything from the neurological basis, behaviors, examples, research, as well as explains the research and findings at a level that everyone can understand. I honestly believe that is you can understand what is going on inside of the brain and why, you can better understand the person and the behaviors.Thank you Temple for everything you do!

Very interesting. As I suspected, it describes the hard wiring in our brain, especially of an autistic/gifted one in a manner I expected. A very useful part of this book is at the end where it describes three types of thinkers and the most likely jobs for each. This is very useful information that needs further exploration. I am older and in my high school they had career testing. This is good but I think there might be something that can be done earlier in a child's school career.We all have strengths and weaknesses that need to be explored plus the sides of each of us that need some assistance. In my time, schools had money for enrichment classes. Ex. I took chemistry in the fifth grade, and studied in depth about Pompeii in the fourth. Now, it is left to parents to fill those gaps. Classes on social expectations such as how to have a conversation, etc. would be excellent for high-functioning Aspergers , and I think the others as well. Then all would know our social cues together just like we must learn math, science, history, etc. A lot of our society now focuses on weaknesses, instead of our individual gifts. Bullies seem to be rewarded and continue their rein even into adulthood and the workplace. People are judged on whether they have the perfect body and perceived flaws are magnified. Acceptance of each all our gifts and those around us is key. If we were all the same then our society would not evolve. Thank goodness for people like Temple.

Loved the science explanations, and even bought a copy for my family to help them understand ASD better. I would like to see more people with the knowledge Temple Grandin's book passes on. Her insightful clear understanding of the types of thinkers and the way Autistic people proscess information should be a must read for every psychiatrist/psychologist/therapist out there in my opinion.This book would be helpful to anyone with or without ASD in better understanding and I recommend it to anyone trying to help their loved ones better understand "what's really going on" in the non-neurotypical brain.

This is a great intro to Blender basics. The guide introduces concepts a few at a time for separate exercises, giving step-by-step instructions on how to put them to use, then reviewing the exercise by showing how each element interacts. From these basic concepts you can get started down the path of computer graphics and animation. With lots of screenshots to accompany each step, it's foolproof. It's straightforward and easy-to-read.The book is really accessible and easy to use. I have some background in programming and basic Android development, but very little knowledge of producing art on PCs apart form basic GIMP. This book was a great first step into Blender, a handy guide for starting into computer graphics, and I recommend it!

As a total newbie in Blender, I wanted a simple and straightforward book to teach me the basics to get me started. This book does exactly that. I liked the fact that the author tries to keep things simple and the usage of lots of screenshots that show you exactly what each step does. In all, a good straightforward book that taught me the basics as well as certain very useful and time-saving tricks. An enabler to get you into more serious 3d modeling.

I really cant understand why the writer had given so much consideration about how one could acquire skills in 3d modeling and didn’t bother to do some proof reading .The book really is fun to read , easy to understand and goes step by step into building knowledge and skills.I am a bit annoyed by the lack of formatting, empty spaces at the bottom of some pages all this tiny things that detract from professionalism , that's why I give a 4 star review.All in all the book helped me , its content in contrast with its formatting… is well structured and the illustrations really help you in learning blender.

I hate to be the first bummer here. I am working my way through this book and the absolute lack of consistent spelling, grammar and especially punctuation make it very difficult.The formatting of the text is also a complete mystery at times. The pictures are tiny, unclear and hard to use as accurate reference.I understand that English is not the author's 1st language, and I strongly encourage the effort made to publish this book.The text deserves at least one proper proof reading, some editing or at minimum a spell check.Publishing a Kindle version I believe would help with the images and the formatting concerns.There are many competing books on Amazon and for $20 I expect not to get bombarded with typos.

Full disclosure - I don't like 3D animation, so I'm the worst kind of student - the unmotivated one. However, as things go in life, the need occurred to familiarize myself with the basics of Blender. Frankly, I did not have great expectations towards this book. I have used program manuals before and generally been underwhelmed.This book managed to surprise me on three accounts. Firstly, the walk-throughs were detailed and usable for a complete beginner, as the author did not seem to take for granted that the reader knows at least some of the functions. Besides the details, they also had something that I've missed in most manuals - along with the instruction, the author explained shortly and without unnecessary technological jargon what the particular functions of the program do.Secondly, the voice of the author - the narrator if you wish - was friendly,and well.. human. Reading the instructions felt in fact less like reading them and more like listening to someone sitting next to you and explaining what to do.Thirdly, this book encourages the reader to take notes, and not only in the standard way of providing the special pages for notes. The one thing this book could definitely use is better proofreading. However, for someone like me who generally does not like writing notes in a book, as it "ruins" them, this turned out to be a good thing, as it did not feel like a semi-sacred text, but a workbook in the most literal sense. (By the way, there is ample space for notes just next to the instructions as well.)

I’ve witnessed first-hand how my clients among America’s former great industrial companies booted thousands of their employees out the door and shipped their jobs off to China and Mexico, often after brutally extorting the fired American employees into training their foreign replacements by threatening to withhold their severance pay.Though I moved to Florida in 1998, I returned in 2011 to a town in Michigan’s beautiful NW Lower Peninsula that is now reinventing itself, with some success, as a recreational town of marinas, boutique shops, craft breweries, and fishing charters. It is right across Lake Michigan from Green Bay.I get over to Wisconsin in most years, and have observed the changes described in this book.The story begins with the closing of the Janesville’s GM plant in 2008, which had operated since 1923. GM’s closing caused a chain reaction of closures among the other auto component factories in town. It was followed by the unrelated closing of the town’s other major employer, the famous Parker Pen Company, which fired its American employees and moved their jobs to Mexico.What happened to all these people booted from employment?As usual in life, it’s a mixed bag. Some of the union members with seniority were offered positions at other GM factories hundreds of miles away. They left their families in Janesville and commuted home on weekends for years until they retired. (Perhaps they did not make permanent moves to the other towns because they held out hope that GM would eventually re-open the Janesville plant. Or perhaps, they were worried that the other GM factories would be closed too, stranding them yet again in another jobless town).A few moved into jobs in social work (getting paid with public money to rehabilitate their laid off neighbors) and criminal justice (prison guards for the unemployed who became criminals).Being the home of Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Janesville had the political pull to make a mighty effort to recover its fortunes with grants of tens of millions of dollars of state, local, and federal money to potential new employers. The town succeeded, by paying $11,500,000, to attract the distribution center of one of the “dollar store” chains, Another grant of $36,000,000 of public money (state, local, federal) attracted a startup medical devices manufacturing company, that may eventually employ up to 150 people. However, offers of nearly $600,000,000 failed to convince GM to reopen its plant.The new jobs pay much less than GM paid, so many people have drastically reduced their standard of living. And the new jobs took years to be created (the medical company will not create most of its projected employment until 2019 at the earliest). Many people were permanently removed from the middle class and drifted into the despair of living from food stamps in public housing, and of resorting to substance abuse to fill their empty days.The most surprising aspect of the book is that going back to trade schools and community colleges for “retraining” was generally counterproductive.=====“Laid-off workers who went back to school were less likely to have a job after they retrained than those who had not gone to school.”Retraining did not translate into greater success at finding a job. Among those who went back to school, the proportion who ended up with steady work was smaller than among the laid-off workers who did not. Worse still, more of those who retrained were not earning any money at all.=====Perhaps this should not be surprising. When the major employer in a town closes, every other employer loses business and starts laying off its people too. What good does it do to retrain from being a factory hand to an office worker, when every office in town is also letting its office people go?The story ends in 2016, with Donald Trump elected President by the votes of folks battered by unemployment in the Industrial Midwest --- people who until then had leaned Democratic. (I was one of them --- having voted Obama in 2012 and Trump in 2016). Janesville’s county voted for Obama in 2012 and Ms. Clinton, by a much narrower margin, in 2016. But it elects Conservative Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan to Congress. Anyone who wants to find a place to study American politics should start in Janesville, which mirrors the national mix of Democrats, Republicans, and IndependentsMy takeaways from the book are:1. Plant closings create an economic cataclysm that is always worse than anticipated. They take down the component feeder factories that supply parts to the big plant. They destroy many small businesses that provided contracted services to the closed plant. The town’s restaurants, merchants, bowling alleys, and so on lose much of their business and start to close. Foreclosed homes owned by the unemployed who are unable to continue paying mortgages flood the market and devalue everybody’s property. It is difficult, if not actually impossible, to fully recover the economy of a town after a major employer lays off its people.2. We were sold a pack of lies about free trade benefiting our workers. NAFTA-WITH-MEXICO and GATT-WITH-CHINA were sold on the promise that they would “create millions of high paying jobs for American workers who will make products for export.” American companies never intended to use free trade agreements to export to other countries. Not a single vehicle was ever exported from Janesville to Mexico or China. We like living in communities here the people know each other and care for each other’s families.New businesses with new jobs, albeit primarily at minimum wage, are also coming to town for the first time in decades. A shadow of prosperity is glimmering for the first time in living memory.Places like Janesville and other towns in the middle of the country have a sense of community that will always make them home to the people who grew up there. If they have not recovered as quickly as we expected, neither have they died.

But what I see here is just what I saw in J.D. Vance: the apotheosis of good people whose lives are shaped by profound insularity and a deep fear of change. Who believe with unassailable certainty that the arc of American economic expansion after the war--an anachronism just as surely as plantation farming in the South and textile milling in England during the 18th and 19th centuries--constitutes an eternal truth. Frankly, I find little in any of that to exalt.Compare, as fairly as you can, the stories of George Parker and Joseph Craig, and even the stories of my immigrant ancestors, and those of (I'm willing to hazard) many of the former line workers at Janesville Assembly. What's gone wrong in the 100 years since? When did the descendants of intrepid people become opiated by the notion that factory jobs paying comparatively high wages for unskilled work--not to mention the campers, basement rec rooms, hunting land, and Packers season tickets that those wages buy--are a birthright, to be handed down from generation to generation without any of the risks of ownership? Where does nobility reside in an unskilled worker, spending to the edge of solvency, who's now so afraid of the unknown--or, in any event, the uncomfortable--that he won't train for a new job that requires a move to, or even immediately consider a relocation that preserves his lifestyle but that requires starting over in (perish the thought), a new town 200 or 400 or 800 miles away?Plainly, I don't like the story. As for the book, it's competently told, at least. I do find the author's approach rather syrupy. Whether she set out with a disposition to lionize the lineworker or whether she simply warmed up to people who are obviously honest and hardworking, there's a consistent tone that's better suited to a high school essay about grandpa who served in the war than to a vigorous piece of journalism. The consistent use of first names is sometimes distracting; why is the congressman from Wisconsin's first district called "Paul," and the former senator from Wisconsin's 15th district "Tim"? Just because they were born in Janesville? (Rick Wagoner of GM is "Wagoner" and Jim Doyle, a native of nearby Madison, is "Wisconsin's governor.) The book does require consistent and unflinching focus, and for that the author deserves credit. If her work becomes required reading at Janesville Parker and Janesville Craig, and at a thousand other schools in the Midwest where immigrant ambition has lost its way, it may yet be a worthy read.

A wonderful, challenging book! Anyone who's picking up Journey to the Orient probably knows what they're getting. This is a pretty good translation, and the most complete English version I've seen, for certain.

Please note that my rating is for this edition of the book, not the complete work itself.Published in France in the 1850s, "Voyage En Orient" is a masterwork of 19th Century Orientalism, with the glib, dandified, and perpetually curious Gerard de Nerval making his way through Cairo and other environs of the Middle East. In its original incarnation the book runs to nearly 700 pages; the full text was translated into English in 1930 by Conrad Elphinstone and published in two volumes by Harcourt Brace as "The Women of Cairo," which was Nerval's original title for the book. Of course this Harcourt Brace edition is long, long out of print. Then in 1972 Norman Glass translated the book into English anew, and his translation at least is still in print, though unfortunately he's gutted the majority of Nerval's narrative.Glass puts his cards on the table in his introduction, stating that modern readers wouldn't wish to read Nerval's digressive descriptions of Cairo, his trip to the Pyramids, and etc, because modern readers are already accustomed to such things via movies and TV. This is ridiculous. For who else would read Nerval's "Journey to the Orient" other than people who WANT to read his descriptions of said things? This books is as niche-market as you can get, yet Glass seems to think it would appeal to the average reader. As if he's translating the French Mark Twain or something.But if this is the only version of Nerval's classic you can easily find in English, it will do - just understand that so much has been lost. Glass picks up the narrative well into Nerval's journey; characters such as his humorous dragoman Abdul appear en media res, with no background material - material which, of course, exists in the unexpurgated version of the story. Regardless, here you will find Nerval trying to act like the locals, buying a slave girl (a feisty Malaysian beauty), researching the Druzes, and listening to dopefueled tales of Masonic mystery. All of it enjoyable, but again, it will only serve to whet your appetite for the full book.In short, this book is an exotic and erotic travelogue which trades on the mysteries of the Freemasons and revels in the pungent smoke of hashish. It is to be read in full, and the reader is directed to that Harcourt Brace edition, which, despite being translated nearly a century ago, still reads as fresh as Glass's more recent translation. You can always get it via Interlibrary Loan if you don't want to shell out the cash for it - copies of the book are a bit pricey on the collector's circuit.

His journey of 1843 is the only part of real interest: the descriptions of people, their relations, their customs, his accommodations to travel. The novella of the story-teller giving a tale of 'Solomon' is astonishing to a Westerner familiar with the wise Solomon of the Bible, as this tale thoroughly denigrates him, reducing him to less than manly or intelligent. Is this a version cooked up for the 'Mohammedans"? to belittle the wise ones of Judea, to help them feel superior? No doubt it is a tale de Nerval heard at the time. It is unsettling, bombastic, heavily told, almost dull in it's elaborations and pontifications. The way he allows Sheba to blather, and never allows any goodness or smarts to Solomon is tiresome, the caricatures are stereotypical and stultifying. The most interesting is his description of his slave, how and why it becomes necessary, how he goes abut it, and mainly, the function of protection which on the surface sounds just as the situation might be described by a benevolent Southern home, he makes the institution sound almost good, and might go a long way to explain why it was accepted for so long in Muslim societies (from 700 Ad, all across the mid East, the Indian Ocean, the Raj, Persia, Turkey, and of course, Africa), and why the Africans appeared to feel no qualm about capturing and delivering their own folk into slavery for so many centuries.My book was perhaps fuller than those here: it was printed by Moyer Bell from the Library of Congress info., still 'selected' and intro by Norman Glass. Travelogue was fun to read; the story within a story- a struggle.

I'm sure that it's a fairly select demographic that buys books by this guy, or has ever heard of him for that matter. He's not necessarily one of those authors that's going to win over a lot of people nowadays even if they do "rediscover" him. Oprah's not going to feature Gerard de Nerval in her little book club. He is just simply too bizarre, too occult and obscure, too "rococo" for the average reader, and I guess he always was. But for those very reasons, there are certain people who will think he's the best thing before or since sliced bread.Evidently fond of exotic locales, customs, women, drugs, etc, it only follows that this nineteenth-century Frenchman would find himself magnetically drawn to the "Orient," to the fabled meccas of Beirut, Cairo, and of course the "font of drug-taking" itself, Constantinople, where he could liberally sample the world-renowned hashish and slave-girls without fear of reprimand from neurotic Europeans obsessed with "propriety." (Indeed his descriptions of such phenomena are just as offensive to the ultra-PC postmodernist of today as they were to his bourgeois contemporaries - and for essentially identical reasons.) He is very much the chauvinist white guy who feels entitled to indulge when among "inferiors."The pedantic intricacy of his descriptions is surely a literary reflection of the action of the drug. "Journey to the Orient" is no ordinary travel-journal; it may be doubted whether half the events recounted ever actually transpired; but the details are consistently rendered with hallucinogenic clarity. In fact, only a few fragments of the original massive tome are included in this translation, but the entire second portion consists of a tale supposedly overheard in a Constantinopolitan coffee-and-hash house, a re-telling, with florid embellishments, of the Masonic legend of the building of Soliman's (Solomon's) Temple and the murder of the architect Adoniram (Hiram Abiff) - yet the narrative never looses the conviction of first-hand experience. I picked the following passage at random - it gives an idea of the baroque style of the book:"Darkness suddenly falls and the sky is muffled by black specks which grow bigger as they approach; flocks of birds tumble into the temple, divide into groups, form circles, jostle together, arranging themselves finally into a sumptuous, shimmering foliage; while their wings unfold into opulent bouquets of green, scarlet, jet-black and azure."It's easy to see why Gerard de Nerval was such an icon for Surrealists like Joseph Cornell. One can open the book to any page and find such immediately visceral passages; the context is almost unimportant. Life is a dream, a sequence of fantastic images, and the best literature can do is to embody the existential experience. If this sounds like your cup of hashish-paste, then dig in.
