Okay I'm going to just dish out the straight facts about this product without the fluff or the lies:1. The cds come with a booklet. Download the cd to your ipod if you want to take it everywhere you go.2. This doesn't teach vocab, doesn't help you magically have conversations on the streets of Paris. This is not Pimsleur/Micheal Thomas etc.3. When the guy starts doing numbers, be prepared to just stop repeating because as soon as he gets to thirty or forty, he speeds up and you're left biting the dust. I'm not kidding. I skip it.4. This course is EXTREMELY GOOD for pronouncing and differentiating certain sounds, such as the "u" in "tu" and "ou" in "fou". This has helped me tremendously and my tutor has definitely noticed a difference.5. Not only is this course good for pronunciation, but for understanding speech. For example, why some words aren't said in daily speech or are clipped short...something you do NOT learn in a classroom setting. It helps with liaisons as well. It makes you see and understand why french in the real world sounds a hell of a lot different/confusing/faster than french in the classroom.6. There are different conversations to follow and listen to, different voices, so you're not listening to one person and getting accustomed to their voice.7. There's repetition that'll annoy you but repetition helps loads. He does a good job at pronunciating everything slowly and exaggerated so you can wrap your mouth around it.8. Repetition is key, no matter how boring the topics on this cd are.Overall, I rate this a four because I found that "The Sounds" section is extremely beneficial. It's the phonetics portion of this course and that's what a lot of intermediate and advanced students like to work on to sound more french. If you want vocab, try Vocabulearn or read a book in french (easy reader, Harry Potter), watch movies and check out TV5. If you want to converse or work on it, hire a tutor or find one on Skype.

I have been using these products for several months AS DIRECTED by their creator, Christian Aubert, and have found them extremely helpful. I've used both "SmartFrench - Introduction to French, Volumes 1 and 2" and also the 4-CD-Set "Beginner Level." What is so amazing about this material is that you truly can learn the language by just listening! If you are planning on a trip to France I would say this is the way to learn. You may not learn to read the language, but you will learn to understand what is said to you and to speak it to some extent, and that is the point. I plan on purchasing "SmartFrench for Travellers" before my trip to get more help in recognizing the written word.Mr. Aubert teaches something that I imagine few other language courses go into--he teaches the contractions that the French use in their conversations. Unless you learn to hear the words contracted (the way French natives actually say them), how can you hope to understand what is being spoken? Mr. Aubert also highlights IN RED the letters that are NOT pronounced in a sentence. (There is a PDF format of "SmartFrench - Introduction to French, Volumes 1 and 2" which can be printed out for your convenience, as well as a booklet included with the 4-CD-Set "Beginner Level").'Just listening is the key to your future progress' says Mr. Aubert, and he is right! I find myself (I'm a gardener) out in the yard telling my plants IN FRENCH, "Well, you've got to have everything!" (See "Beginner Level CD 1 - Soundis" and you'll know where I'm coming from;-) It is so much fun to have French words or phrases pop into my head from out of the blue, and I feel like a child learning her first language with ease. If you don't try this material and do it consistently, you'll never experience the joy I'm talking about. Five days a week I spend an hour on my treadmill with my earphones on, and I'm learning a language without the chore of memorizing. Imagine that! Pas mal!

What I LOVE about this SmartFrench CD are the interviews with 19 different people (chef, fashion model, musician--you get the idea). You can listen to each person talking about their career (very interesting!). There is a very high quality booklet included with the CD. The booklet contains the text of what each French person is saying about their career. The French words are color coded so that whatever is not pronounced (silent) is printed in another color. That is SO helpful to me! Now I am able to read a little, too. The English text is also included. French text on left page, English on right--so you can compare. It's one thing to learn French in a classroom, but it is different thing entirely to hear it spoken by native French speakers. This CD helps to tune your ear so that it makes sense.I use the booklet a lot. It goes over how to pronounce the alphabet, numbers and silent letters. It has charts of `sounds'. I have a lot of materials at home to help me learn French, and most methods forget to teach/review the basics. Also included are "Useful dialogues when you visit France" for use in the subway, on the street, in the taxi, café, at the concierge's desk, restaurant, a friends wedding, post office, museum, hotel and airport.I really love using this SmartFrench CD. I was a beginning French speaker before our trip to France 3 months ago. Being in France helped attune my ear to the language, but I could only pick up a few words. This CD is helping me to comprehend a LOT more French when I hear my French friends talking, and I am beginning to speak so that I am understood!

Yes, as one reviewer noted, this slim volume is a distillation of Hollis' earlier books. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as Jungian material benefits from repeated readings, revealing & provoking more as the reader grows into greater understanding of the powerful forces driving his/her life. But there's something else here, as well: an autumnal tone, a sense of approaching the end of a long life & vocation. In reading these pages, I feel his urgent desire to sum up as much of that life & as much of the knowledge that he's gleaned from it as he possibly can. Is that simply my imagination at work? Perhaps ... even so, that feeling gives this reading all the more depth, at least for me. It's essentially the end of a lifelong course in psyche & growth, in which he tells us once more what he's been telling us all along. And that's something worth hearing again -- most highly recommended!

Living An Examined Life is compelling. I have read every book written by James Hollis, Ph.D., and they all satisfy the spirit but this one was extraordinary. Here are just some of the places that engaged me all week and continue to do so:In Chapter 4 Dr. Hollis writes “When the path we are on is right for our souls, the energy is there.” Are there any truer words? I think not and my body agrees.I felt excited to read and remember that we all have an ongoing opportunity to shout down our fears especially when they are attached to old complexes. I felt encouraged to understand more deeply how grace transforms when one least expects it and how the soul never fails to point us in the right direction to live our “own” lives and not another person's idea of what that means. I also heard his gentle warning of the consequences to our soul when we ignore, deny or dismiss its bidding. The chapters - in this 21 step plan to attend to the unfinished business in our lives - transition effortlessly. This break between chapters allows the reader to pause, close the book, and ponder the healing message each step offers. (Early on in this life-giving book, the author recommends we read only one chapter each day.) That was initially difficult for me because I wanted to keep on going but I followed his suggestion and it made for a rich reflection.I was particularly touched in Chapter 18 where Dr. Hollis shares his personal thoughts on honoring the difference between job, duty, and calling. Here he expressed his own gratitude to all the people in his life who do jobs that each of us benefits from daily. In this chapter he also mentioned a bit about his own journey and the difficult paths of those others he loved and who didn’t have as many opportunities as he.James Hollis is a brilliant man yet his kindness, his humor, and his humanity are ever present in his books as well as in his lectures. He is a man for all seasons and this latest book, Living An Examined Life, will help a multitude; it has already helped me and my soul thanks him for doing so.

This is a wonderful concise summary of James Hollis's life work. Each of the 21 chapters is short and offers an encapsulation of his wisdom and advice. I followed his advice and read the book at the rate of one chapter a day. This is a good approach and allows you to really internalize the material before moving on to the next topic. This book serves as both a good introduction to Hollis's thought for those unfamiliar with his writings and as a very good summary of the material he presents in his earlier books. If you like this book and want more, I recommend my favorite Hollis book is Hauntings - Dispelling the Ghosts Who Run Our Lives [Paperback Edition]. This book offers similar lessons on how to approach the second half of your life in your search for meaning.

"Although the world is full of people who will tell you who you are, what you are, and what you are to do and not to do, they wander amid their unaddressed confusion, fear, and need for consensual belief to still their own anxious journey". (locs. 83-85).The last book by Hollis is perhaps the most accessible didactic and approachable book he has ever written, and the one I would recommend to anybody who wants to get a shortcut to his work. In Living an Examined Life, Hollis has somewhat put aside his usual erudition, academic writing, psychologist jargon and complexity of thought, and made a serious effort to address those points of his discourse that I've always found a bit vague or difficult to understand. However, no sacrifice has been made regarding content, and you will still find his usual depth of thought, understanding of human suffering and nature, his compassion for human weakness, and his analysis of preconditioned inherited ancestral behaviour and complexes. There is, as usual in his work, a call to live our own live with purpose, taking responsibility for it, to honour our true nature and live authentic and genuine lives, to do/work vocationally because our vocation is the expression of our soul not just something we do for fame, money, power and social accolades.Living an Examined Life is is not a book with solutions to our problems, but a book with sound advice on how to overgrow them by changing our attitudes, behaviours and way of seeing them, by going inside ourselves and taking responsibility for our deeds, and changing anything that stops us from being who we truly were born to be. It demands sitting with our discomfort and asking to it which message is bringing to us. It demands from us doing what we fear the most, learning to love our unlovable parts, scrutinising our inherited values, and deciding which ones are meaningful to us. In a way, we are asked to become medieval-alike post-modern warriors, and go in search of the evil dragon inside ourselves to rescue our true self.SOME OF MY HIGHLIGHTSThere are so many paragraphs and comments that really made the reading very fulfilling and satisfying to me. Herewith a few of them:>> Chapter 10, W"hat gift have you been withholding from the world?" is beautifully profound yet simple, it speaks to the soul without the need of calling any gods, and it is a call to authenticity and honouring the call of our soul.>> Although Hollis devoted a whole book to the Shadow (Why Good People Do Bad Things: Understanding Our Darker Selves), nothing comes nearly as clear to a definition of the shadow as the one he provides in this book.>> One of the things I have criticised Hollis for in the past is for his vague definition of Second Half of Life but, in this book, Hollis does a great job at defining what that exactly means by that.>> Hollis almost-utopian parenthood model is utterly beautiful, like a step ahead of our times, perhaps; something that, if I had children, I would try to implement so that my unborn children would be whatever they wanted to be, to shine their light or perhaps their crap, without judgement, if that is ever possible.>> Hollis' call to re-evaluate our life authorities is perhaps the most revolutionary aspect of his work, and also one of the things that gives me the most comfort. It makes me realise that we all live in the same existential mess and forces me to be more compassionate with myself and others: "Tiny in a world of giants, we reason that surely the world is governed by those who know, who understand, who are in control. How disconcerting it is then when we find our own psyches in revolt at these once protective adaptations, and how disillusioning it is to realize that there are very few, if any, adults on the scene who have a clue as to what is going on." (locs. 155-157). "Growing up requires that we accept that no one out there knows what is going on, that they are as much at the mercy of their complexes and unconscious mechanisms as the least of us, and so now we must figure it out for ourselves." (locs 1699-1701).>> Hollis munching about happiness are precious. He debunks happiness, I know, I know, nothing we would like to hear when we are reading a book to help us with our miseries. However, Hollis' focus is on seeking meaning instead of happiness, because that's more important for the soul. He says that 'meaning is an organ of the soul'. Amen!SOME QUERIES>> Given the definition Hollis makes of Second Half of Life, I wonder why not changing it for something less anachronistic and more precise, like True Maturity or True Adulthood, perhaps. Second Adulthood, which Hollis uses at times in the book is also misleading because some people only become adults after a crisis, so that is their first psychological adulthood no?>> I found myself pondering about the following statement: " Virtually every client with whom I have worked over the last four decades has had to struggle mightily to find a personal path, a journey that is right for him or her. They all find their journeys impeded by parental limitations, pressures, and models.(locs. 1333-1335)." My question is, can our innate character and way of being be strong enough to obtrude our advance us despite what he says in the quotation?>> Regarding his ideal model of parenthood, I found myself questioning if different family structures and ways of relating, as those we see in different world cultures can do this in different ways that are still healthy for the psyche but coming from different cultural backgrounds.>> Hollis bluntly states that rites of passage are missing in our contemporary culture. I consider that true if we talk about passage rituals as seen in traditional cultures and the times of our elders. However, I consider some young people's wild behaviour as rites of passage, it is just that they are vacuous, meaningless, rites of separation, at best, that do not bring real maturity. Also, women had rarely had rites of passage in traditional cultures, as within those traditions women were second-class humans, souls and brains, mostly child-bearers and rearers. So, in a way, many women have only male rituals of passage to imitate, and I wonder whether young women behaving wildly, as wild as wild men, aren't just taking on passage rites that once were male because they don't have a substitutive that brings power and meaning to their lives. I also wonder whether feminism, the meaningful version not fanatic one, is a form of ritual passage for contemporary women, as it is charged with meaning, and serves women, even those who reject it, but can vote or work in whatever they want because feminist fought for that. I'd love to hear Hollis comment on this.IN SHORTLiving an Examined Life is a book easy to read, meaningful, thoughtful and very comforting, but also a bit repetitive and impractical if you want step-by-step practical advice. This is not a book with cookie-cutter solutions or rosy advice. I can only say that I always come back to my highlights of this book when I have a bad day, feel awkward for being myself, and find myself immersed in misery and stuck in ways of being that I know don't work for me. Hollis is ready waiting for me, with a hug to comfort me, a whisper in my ear to wake me up, and slap on the face to react. Are you up to the task? For whatever reason, I think this book is especially suited to introverts, who naturally seek introspection and depth.

Let’s see it would be somewhere in the late 1970s and early 1980s, during my life in the SE Michigan general liberty movement—which at that time still had a decidedly Libertarian Party component, at least for me—Chris and his wife Julie were welcome, sane voices in that not always august milieu. In 1978, Chris wrote a short book What about gods?, which became the modern standard for helping children think intelligently about the phantasmagoric world of deities and religion. [I would like gods? to be required reading for first graders in the government schools… but of course someone on the school board would jump up to shoot down such an ‘irreverent’ book for junior and his friends. “What about moral values!?” they’d exclaim.]Exactly.What to Think About is a fertile continuation of Chris’s earlier book, moving into the more general realm of philosophy and targeting, it seems, today’s junior-high and high-school aged kids. Likewise, school districts around the country would do well to insert this new book into the curriculum—if not required then highly recommended. Why? Because the students themselves will find this little nugget a godsend as they struggle with moral values, what to make of themselves, and the enormity of what the official world is slamming down upon them these days… per John Lennon:“The world is run by insane men for insane purposes.”Never more true than at the present. Moreover, by many accounts the psychopath elites seem to be winning. [A prospect that Mr. Brockman wisely excludes from his Big Picture.] I like how the author refreshes my own memory of the (Ayn) Randian economy of expressing what philosophy is—metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, politics, aesthetics— and answering the question “Who needs it?”. And he does so in a manner that will flow for most teens.Excerpted from my full book review (at TheCoffeeCoaster.com/?p=6348).

It is important that people of all ages be clear thinkers who consider life and death and how we all fit into the scheme of existence. Chris Brockman in, What to Think About, Philosophy for a Thoughtful Younger Generation, explains philosophy as a framework for thinking through its five branches, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics and politics. Metaphysics gets us thinking about what life is, God, creation and other thoughts of existence. Epistemology asks how we can know such things. Ethics has us considering our own conduct and what is right and wrong for humans everywhere. Aesthetics helps us evaluate beauty and politics asks how we live together peaceably in society with all out disparate beliefs.Brockman encourages us to think with clarity and guided purpose about these subjects. The book is made of 6 chapters each of which concludes with many excellent questions that guide the reader to ponder and come to their own conclusion about who they are and what they should think about. Many students will come to different philosophical conclusions than Brockman but that is the prerogative of a thinking mind. For young people embarking on the journey of their lives, What to Think About is like a guidebook to thinking that can help the student of existence to understand his or her own being and as such is a valuable learning tool.
