I saw this graphic novel at the library where I work and decided to read it. I knew some things about Josephine Baker but not a whole lot. This novel goes above and beyond what I expected. The artwork really brought Ms. Baker to life; her smile is timeless. The writing is very well-written and detailed but not overly detailed to the point of unnecessary information. In fact, it keeps her career and fiery personality at the forefront while introducing you to the people she met along her life journey.I highly recommend this novel.

"Josephine Baker" is a graphic novel written by José-Louis Bocquet, illustrated by Catel Muller, and translated into English by Edward Gauvin. It's an ambitious tome, large enough to prop open a door, and covers her life from birth to death. Baker lead a very full and exciting life, however, which makes capturing it all in one book difficult. "Josephine Baker" works best as an introduction to her life, an opening of the door for other works that cover specific aspects of her life like her activism or spy efforts, for instance. Unfortunately it's just a bit too much to cram into one book, leaving it feeling rushed and superficial.The art, in black and white, is a bit uneven. Baker and most figures are cartoonish, rendered in brushwork that's beautiful but blunt. Other figures are drawn in a way that's recognizable. We can see who they are immediately. One would think that Baker, the main subject of the book, would have similar treatment but no: her depiction remains cartoonish and often interchangeable with other female characters. Some of the lines of motion when people are dancing are lovely and graceful, but other times the dancers look like monkeys... which, when the subject matter is Black people, can be an issue. The illustrations of buildings are beautiful, like architectural renderings, and a stark contrast to the very fluid- and usually thick- lines used to depict humans.As I mentioned, the book skims along the surface of Baker's life without lingering too long on any detail. It feels less like a biography and more like a chronological cataloging of events: her marriages, her affairs, her venues, her many adopted children (12), etc. It doesn't really dip into any one thing and explore it, so the book winds up feeling a bit empty. It would be much more effective if it had picked a single topic and explored it fully. For instance, her adoption of twelve children; her civil rights activism; her spying for the Allies against the Axis; HER BISEXUALITY. Yes, this is a book that mentions her many many affairs with men but not with women, that in fact mentions in one line that she has relationships with women and that's it. And even that isn't given any importance. There's also a section in the back of short biographies of the people in her life and men vastly outnumber women there, too.The book succeeds in one very important way: it left me more curious about Baker's life and interested enough to seek out other books about her. However as a stand-alone book it doesn't soar.

Brilliant drawings & story! What a LIFE Josephine Baker lived. It is utterly amazing. Literally from rags to riches & back again then back up again. She not only sang & danced in many countries but she adopted children of all colors & religions, to prove we can all live together in peace.All her affairs, her standing up against racism, even working as a spy to help during WWII--what a Life!!

A few days later, she was hosting Easter, when she received a pre gathering delivery from one of her guests...the rose tree...turns out the guest actually had requested that Easter lilies be sent, but the florist ~mixed~ the order up, and the author ended up with exactly what she had intended.Well..having read that, I decided to put that exact suggestion into use, intending that I would receive flowers in the next few days-- figuring Start small, with no actual attachment to the outcome.This afternoon, my husband called, saying he was hitting the grocery store on the way home, did I want anything? Between the time of the call and his arrival home, I remembered the flowers, and thought to myself, oh good, hopefully he will pick up the standard white roses we often grab to put on the table in our kitchen area, but without my prompting.. In he came with all the bags, and no flowers. I wasn't phased, figured, I'd maintain my intention, and that was that.A minute or two later he went back out to close the garage door or whatever. I, at this point, was busy going through the mail, so had my back to him. When I happened to turn back around to say something, there in my line of sight were, yes, you already guessed it-- flowers! Not the white roses, but instead an exquisite arrangement of red and white roses mixed in with branches of cherry blossoms, and a lovely assortment of beautiful flowers. I was absolutely and utterly stunned, and still am. I don't know about you, but that was all the proof I could possibly need, and will be continuing my studies with Ms Florence Scovel Shinn, and this book!I do want to add --- I have been avidly and actively reading quite a few of the prayers in Susan Shumsky's books as well--- they are profound in the depth of their power, and I cannot recommend them enough - Instant Healing and Miracle Prayers are my go to's; I have to give additional credit where it is unquestionably due. The prayers are truly healing in removing a multitude of blocks,fears, and other issues in my life, and I'm now a strict believer and dedicated to reading them aloud at least once daily. Some of those prayers deal with healing our mindsets of lack to not feeling we deserve the highest and best things that God/the Universe/our higher selves/whatever higher power you believe in has to offer. And will offer us if we remember to ask, work on our mindsets in thinking and speaking positively, and trusting that no matter what, the outcome will come about as good, if not better than we could ever have expected (white roses vs gorgeous bouquet), with focus, surrender, and persistence in following the steps ... Start simple, go from there, and you can count on seeing the results in the blink of an eye as I did...Namaste

The book is dated, but the advice is solid - it's true that "thoughts become things," but you kind of have to meet the Universe/God/Whomever halfway and do the work yourself, too. I think that's what sets this book apart from books like "The Secret" (which reads like garbage, IMO, but to each their own). This is less about wishing and more about attitude - but let me tell you, once you get your mindset right, interesting things will start happening. Read with an open heart and an open mind - and trust!!

I purchased this book from a local bookstore about 25 years ago. At the time I had applied some of the principals and positive things started happening in my life. I remember entering more than one office lottery and winning the top prize twice. I also desperately wanted my own apartment at that time. I applied some of the principals and I got the apartment that I am still living in today. Another miracle had also occurred concerning my apartment desire. I was living with my mother at the timeand her telephone was not working. I was so nervous because I thought the lady from the sales office wouldn't be able to reach me to tell me whether I was approved for the apartment. Note: Cell phones were not being used in those days. Anyway, I followed a principle in this book and just let go. My mother was on the phone one day talking to a friend and after she finished the call she went to hang up, the lady from the sales office was on the line. If my mother wasn't on the phone I would have never received that call that day. Read this book and apply the priniciples. It worked for me in the past and I am going to re-read it again to see if some more positive things will flow my way!

I've read a number of books related to the topic of the God power we can all utilize, and I think this book was written in a clear and concise manner that doesn't go too far into religion or too far into philosophy. She is able to convey her points in a sweet spot that should be easy for most people to understand as well as easily to put to use. There are a number of spelling errors, but I think that might be a result of conversion from print to Kindle. I will read this book many times over.

The author’s beliefs and teachings are obviously based on the Bible but she does not use the references in a negative way. I love her teachings which are life changing if followed. I was very disappointed that as I was following the text and listening to the audio, it skipped over every reference to Jesus. You cannot take Jesus out of the teachings of the Bible because it is all inspired by him. Many of the quotes in this book are from Him. If you take him out of this book you are taking out all of the teachings of this author. I don’t know why someone would want to take out the one person who loved everyone on this Earth, no matter what they had done. Even the people that killed Him. Even the person who has edited His name out of the this book. Read for yourself in the actual Bible. Luke 23:34

Who would have thought that a 1037-page, 80-year-old novel about a spoiled, petulant teenager in petticoats would completely suck me in, and turn out to be one of the greatest novels of all time?Everything about this book is beyond superlative--vivid characters, settings that live and breathe, but especially Margaret Mitchell's prose. It would be worthwhile for any writer to study her sentences, every one of which flows with living motion, without a single flowery word. The dialogues between Scarlett and Rhett make sparks fly off the pages!One could criticize the liberal use of racially offensive terms and the portrayal of happy slaves, but I would disagree. Within the world so meticulously created by the author, a bygone world, for all its faults, that was seen as being in equilibrium before its downfall, to have done otherwise would have been false.This is truly the Great American Novel, in the top 5 of the greatest books I've ever read, and I suggest that you will thank yourself for reading it. My only regret about finishing Gone With the Wind is that now I can never again read it for the first time.

I bought this book after reading a politically correct rant in a magazine by someone who thought it was high time that the book should be shunned or even banned. In general, I tend to think that anything that people want to ban should be immediately and strongly supported for free speech reasons, if nothing else, but I did not necessarily have high expectations for the book. I assumed it would be a low/middlebrow, well written historical romance, but not much more than that. I was way wrong. Its a great novel on many levels: plot, characterization, narrative flow, and effective advocacy and support for a vanquished way of life (Mitchell does not pretend to be objective; she is fighting a rear guard action to defend the South she loved against the judgment of history; the reason she infuriated liberal critics from the moment the book was published to the present day was because she fought that action so effectively in this book.). Of course, her view of the institution of slavery was disingenuous (at best), but, on the other hand, her bitter attacks on the carpetbaggers and speculators during the reconstruction era certainly ring true. But the politics of the book are not the elements that make it great; it is the portrayal of an era and the way she makes you care about the events, characters, and land that make up Scarlett O'Hara's worldThis novel is the second greatest selling book of all time (the Bible is first), and I can now see why it has maintained its extraordinary popularity for 75 years. That popularity was, and is, well deserved.

Hoo boy, this is a hard one to describe. I should point out that I'm from Atlanta born and raised and read this book multiple times as a kid and LOVED it. But re-reading it as an adult it's really hard to get past the egregious and inescapable racism that permeates it. On the one hand the main story is a good one, well written and well told. Scarlett is a great character, a true female antihero who's complex and maddening and very human. Margaret Mitchell has a gift for characterization and story telling and the writing is generally fantastic.BUTBut it's un-apologetically racist, the characterizations of the non-white parties are cringe-inducing and as a rational adult it's hard to swallow the book's smug assurance that most slaves were happy, that Reconstruction was tyranny and that the white landowners of the antebellum South were the true victims of the Civil War. As a young white bookworm with liberal parents who was anxious to believe that racism and civil rights issues were a thing of the past I was able to forgive these flaws but now in this racially charged day of deep income and racial inequality it's a lot harder to just ignore that side of the novel.On the other hand is it unjustifiably written off as fluff because of its female author in a way that, say, Rudyard Kipling and Mark Twain novels are not? Yes I believe it is. Is it feminist? I think a case can be made for that too. But as for how many stars to give it I need multiple categories. For racism it gets zero stars, for a well told love story that ponders the complexity of female friendships as well as the nature of desire and the ways we lie to ourselves in the name of love it gets five. Beyond that and regarding its place in the literary canon, I am unqualified to say.

Of course this book is still very much an American classic and as exciting a read as in 1935 when it was first published. This is my first time reading it in 30 yr., although I read it several times as a young adult.So many parts of the story that were not particularly as important when I was in my early 20's were glaringly important to me now. Such as the beginnings of the Klu Klux Klan, and why. Also, during the reconstruction, the real differences between "new" money and the old. Learning about the hardships placed on the whites by the National govt.,such as allowing black people to vote and not allowing the whites to do so. Evidently decent people,black and white suffered incredibly.One must also keep in mind that Mrs. Mitchell was also the product of her time, living in Atlanta with her well to do family, and servants who'sparents and grandparents had probably been slaves to her household before the Civil War. It is to her credit that she tries to tell both sides of the story, black and white.This book is so fine, on so many levels, I believe it should be read by just everyonem
