This book is engaging and definitely for a female audience, which I liked. The plot doesn't come to fruition, though; the entire book is like Part One, with no resolution. In the end, it therefore doesn't satisfy, though it is interesting enough to leave you wanting to read more. It also, somewhat unabashedly, steals from Brandon Sanderson's famous Mistborn series.
This one starts quite slowly but picks up after a few chapters. The characters are quite odd as they all seem to have something to dislike about them and it is quite a long way into the book before you decide who are the bad guys and who are the good, who can be saved, and who needs to be killed.It is a "sort of" cliff hanger as nothing gets resolved in this book and it ends a bit oddly but not leaving the sharp transition that some cliff hangers do.I can't say I particularly like any of the characters at this stage but there seems to be lots of potential with some of them. The magic is quite different to a lot of what I read and the world building is coming along by the end of book one. The story is a bit same old same old with the magic users being persecuted by the "supposedly" non magic users and an evil king who is in turn being manipulated himself so I found things a bit predictable but I quite liked the writers style and found it an easy quick read and look forward to book two.
Fantasy is my favourite genre but when I read too many after each other, I get bored. Writers tend to follow the same classic structure, the "hero's journey" and it gets tired. I get tired of it.Heart of Mist on the other hand felt absolutely fresh. Sure, it has magic, it has knights and kings and no technology but the mixture they are presented in, the characters they are presented by, do not feel old at all.Even after reading the whole book I am not sure what to expect in the next two, what will happen and how will it end. I love this feeling!I love the characters: there is no "chosen one" here, all of them are fleshed out with flaws and issues and a full life, bad choices and good choices, nobody is perfect. There is only very little of everyone wanting the same girl (so far),and you can breathe because there is no love triangle either (yet).It is not a book that will challenge you about society or ethics - but it does put you in a position where you will wonder what would you do. And for me, that is enough.
Bleak began as quite an interesting character, strong-willed but heavily, understandably flawed. Her strength and weakness create a beautiful dichotomy which brings out truly human traits in her that we can relate to. Her character development only deepens, with certain events creating a great character.Henri was a shallower character, with few likeable qualities. A grim character can be likeable (see Geralt in the Witcher, Batman, Solomon Kane), and Henri needed some redeeming characteristic. Lacking these, she seemed more of a 'bad guy' than anything.I found Bren's character to be quite dull, and his constant whinging that he deserved reciprocation because "I am such a nice guy" was frankly worrying. He spoke like a fool and acted the part, so his relationship with Bleak felt very out of place.Dash, on the other hand, is likeable, nice without expectation, and genuinely fresh. Swinton is very well-written, too.There are a few POV characters introduced too late in the story, such as Dash and Swinton. I don't mind switching POV, but these seemed both unnecessary at the time, and a bit jarring. I really enjoyed seeing things from Bleak's point of view, Henri and Swinton less so.The virtuous magical tree-dwelling folk hearkened back a little too much to the Tolkienesque cliché of elves and nature. They reminded me so much of Avatar's forest people that I had to remind myself that these were humans, not blueskinned aliens or elves with pointy ears. Final Fantasy XII, Pocahontas, and many fantasy stories use this theme, and it is a little tiresome. Also, the lesbian relationship felt forced, and added nothing to the story.The plot proceeded very slowly in the forest, as well, with explanations of the magic system dragging out a little too long. The last third of the book picked up and is a good example of what the first 2/3s should have been like.Overall 3/5. I'd like to give 3.5, but Amazon won't allow that. I was simply too bored for most of the book, and some characters were simply annoying/dull/boring.
I really wanted to like this book. The story telling was interesting as it jumps from different perspectives. I liked the world building and descriptions of places. It’s just the people I didn’t like. For me, the only likable characters were the children. I didn’t relate easily to the main characters and consequently, I didn’t really care what happened to them. I understand making characters real and flawed, but I need to be able to root for a character in order to stay interested. Although I like the author’s writing style, I don’t think I’ll continue with the series.
I am a fan of Sabaa Tahir, author of A Torch Against the Night series and also I love the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. Heart of Mist by Helen Scheuerer has elements that remind me of the previously mention books. I love this thing they have going on where a hand full of characters tell the story but mostly the main character's point of view is the one you read the most. It makes the story come together in a way where the reader is let in on some secrets each character reveals and the reader has to put the clues together to figure out what it all means. It makes me feel like I'm in the story too. It's exciting and fun because I can't skim, I'll miss something. It makes you pay attention and you never get bored. I am looking forward to the release of the second book. My only complaint is that I wish the book would have been more like 450 pages rather than 350. I would have gotten more for my dollar.
