The book waa very enlightening. It gave a wealth of information not only on the hot spots to see and things to do but also has information regarding travel safety, best times to go and even gives suggestions of itineraries to help plan out your trip. I loved that it covered so many of the places we would be visiting and even provided links to many of the suggested places to visit. Great buy! Definte must read before going to Scandinavia!

This book is self published and it shows. There is a certain charm to the way 400 years of history is summed up in one sentence saying something like "somehow the city regained its spirit in 1808" or the goofy discussion of Icelandic drinking water (I think it's safe but smells like sulfur?) but the gaps in reliable info mean I will be buying another book--published in 2015 by rick steves.

Poorly written without very much meaningful information. Don't waste your money on this guide.

Does not give any history or background of the historic places. Good only for restaurant and important places to be visited .

The cover is classic! Lift and Separate is a brilliant title for the story of a woman who is the victim of her husband's midlife crisis that he apparently waited to have until he was almost a senior citizen. I thought Marcy was way too good for a man would do what Harvey did to her. I really cheered her on. It wasn't the typical midlife crisis because they were too old for that, but she didn't just roll over and give up when he left her. She took the promotion she had been offered and created a new life that worked for her. I was glad he gave her a second chance to have the life she deserved!

This is a book that had been on my radar for quite some time--I mean, just look at that title. I also follow the author on Facebook (she is hilarious), so I felt like it was going to be the perfect vacation read. And it was, but it wasn't quite what I expected. I went into reading this thinking it would be a light romp featuring a more mature heroine. Instead, I found a more thought-provoking and sensitive novel, which still led me to laugh more times than I could count.I appreciate that Rothstein was able to balance humor and seriousness. The scenario of a long-standing marriage in jeopardy is not a funny one and Rothstein never tries to make light of it. Instead, the humor comes from Marcy's insight and reactions. Not only does this lighten the mood, but it adds great depth to Marcy. I found her to be a believable and sympathetic character, and one that I rooted for.Around Marcy is a colorful cast of characters. Rothstein hits the sweet spot for the size of her supporting cast. Every character plays an integral role in Marcy's life and they help to propel the plot forward. Each person was distinct and fleshed out, with the exception of Harvey. But, honestly, this book isn't about Harvey. He's obviously important to the situation, but what is going through his mind isn't important to the story.Once I was able to devote time to this book, I was hooked. The plot moves smoothly and swiftly and Marcy's experiences were authentic and believable. There were many times when I really wasn't sure what decision Marcy would make and, even if I didn't agree with what she chose, I could still believe that she would choose it.This was an entertaining novel with more depth than I expected. It is one that I would recommend to anyone wanting something humorous and deceptively un-fluffy.

Highly enjoyable, well written first novel by this author! I especially liked the CT references with slight alterations (St Mordechai..)! A great escape on a cold winter's day (could have easily read in one sitting if the dog could take care of himself..)

She has also been at home with her children and has done the best she can in bringing them up. She gets to have lunch with a close friend, and chat with her older Mom. Marilyn will probably tell you that Harvey is a generous tipper to a fault, and only wants the best of everything. Again, you might wonder what is wrong with this picture?Harvey is not sure what he wants. Harvey did want a well endowed 22 year old model in his lingerie department. Now he isn’t sure if he wants to come home or not. Marcy is hurt and devastated, but does lift herself up, and deal with the problems that life throws her way. There are secrets, and strained friendships, and Marcy’s children have some problems as well.Marilyn Simon Rothstein uses her storytelling ability with wonderful wit and a sense of humor, making this such an emotional, heartwarming and delightful story. I appreciate that the author discusses the importance, of family, friends, loyalty, trust, love, hope, faith and growth. I would recommend this for readers who enjoy Women’s fiction. I couldn’t put “Lift and Separate” down! This brilliant, funny novel was written from the heart. If you’ve ever experienced a difficult period, as I and so many women have, this book's for you. The marvelous story, told from an honest perspective, took me through lots of emotions. I felt the main character’s pain and appreciated her humor in the face of it. As she deals with trials and tribulations, Marcy is wise, generous and insightful. Nice that this lovely lady is a 59-year-old who’s rediscovering her confidence with the help of her loyal grown children and supportive friends. I really related to Marcy. I admired the heroine as she handled everything that life threw at her, always armed with an arsenal of wisecracks. Marcy’s a resilient character and a great wife, mother, daughter and friend no matter life’s ups and downs, even the way-downs. This well-crafted, engaging and uplifting book resonated with me as it will for every woman who juggles husband, kids, family, career and community. I loved every moment of “Lift and Separate.” It’s a great read and I wholeheartedly recommend it. In fact, I’ve ordered five copies as Christmas gifts – three for friends, one for my mom and one for my sister.

Although I anticipated this book I was disappointed because the majority of the recipes contained lead. The variety of artists I did enjoy. A couple of the recipes (USA artists) had different amounts or cone temps. from those I found in Ceramic Arts Daily or on the internet. Rick Riordan Is My Favorite Author, and I am 61 years old. So I Really Recommend All Of His Books. With Vigor! From the time I began reading his first book until I finished his last book, I have never been able to stop reading it! Trust Me It Is A GREAT BOOK!

My daughter has read this book alot and absolutely loves it. She adores the complicated words and pictures. I myself have read it and can say it really hits the spot. It's funny and fictional, both things my little girl can't resist. She herself is a little jokester and she found some halarious puns in this novel. Rick Riordan is an amazing author and my little Poof is his best fan that I know of. I definitley recommend this book to all kids out there, just like my awesome but very, positively fantastic and beautiful daughter with a sense of humor.

My granddaughter loves this series!

This was a very quick, kind of fun read to go with the rest of the Percy Jackson series. There wasn't some amazing storyline to get engrossed in, but it was still entertaining for the type of companion book it is.

Yael Kohen writes, We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy at the time of and in response to Christopher Hitchens’ article in Vanity Fair proclaiming women aren’t funny.“Comedy has always reflected society- its values, taboos, norms. Surely, then, it only makes sense that the rise of women in comedy has run parallel to the rise of women in out society” (5). This is one of several hooks in the introduction, however I lost interest hereafter.Kohen’s introductions to chapters are concise, consisting mostly of history with a sprinkle of her own observation.The format of the book is awkward. Each paragraph is an oral account of club proprietors, writers, performers, producers, etc.- the name and profession in bold type followed by their personal story. The problem with this is, the book gave little indication of its format, thus confusing me right out the gate. Another reason this is troublesome is because it doesn’t move the history along. There is an abundance of information embedded in the oral accounts and I learned a great deal, but I felt like I had to hunt for the information. Not everything accounted for needed to be recounted.Kohen’s book is well researched and surely informative. I loved learning how women dealt with sexism in each of their generations, past to present. I learned Phyllis Diller preferred to work gay clubs because they were chic; the audience had higher brow expectations for jokes unlike the vaudeville clubs.I appreciate Kohen creating an inclusive environment in her book- men and women participate in the discussion- this is how feminism is thrives and paradigms begin to shift.Kohen does a wonderful job researching and including so many wonderful people, but I feel there might be a few missing pieces. Chapter Three: Prime Time introduction speaks of the 1970s as the “most prolific decade for women in television” (57). The introduction and statement discredits the early work of women such as Lucille Ball and Donna Reed (creator and producer, respectively). Without them, how could the “most prolific decade for women in television” exist?Overall, Kohen pieced together a scrambled and misogynistic history into a densely rich, accessible perspective. For that, I thank her. This book should be the jumping off point for turning this into a documentary.

Of course this is a book about the women comedians of now and the past, but interestingly, the portraits are painted (for the most part) by other women comedians talking about each other (unfortunately, Sarah Silverman, one of my absolute favorites, declined to participate, which did not prevent others from talking quite a bit ABOUT her).From the earliest television programs (Garry Moore) through Johnny Carson and up to the present, they are all here. What was of interest as well, the author details the rise of comedy clubs, and introduces us to the proprietors - why they succeeded (or didn't ), what the policies are and were, and constructs and history of labelling and, actually, quite a bit of discrimination against these wonderfully talented performers.Read it -- you'll like it !

Just ok...Its interesting to gain the knowledge of what the women comics had to go through to be known by not only the club owners, but the public at large. Problem is , so many of these stories are just too repetitive.

This book is full of first-hand accounts of the history of women in comedy. Stand-up, sketch, improv, and scripted shows are all covered. It's a fun read for anyone interested in show business or, for that matter, in women's places in American society through the years. Older people will remember some of the pioneer work that is celebrated, such as the great routines Elaine May did with Mike Nichols in the 1950's. Younger folks will enjoy learning about the roots of today's favorites - Ellen, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, etc.

Yes, women comics are featured - and that's great! But if you like the behind-the-scenes look into comedy, it's for all to read.Easy read, in-depth, with actual comedian's feelings and comments about the industry.

A useful tool but not a book to sit down and read. The collected interviews offer information but the book offers little perspective.

It's a great history of women in comedy and I learned a lot from it! It's interesting to hear about women getting into the comedy scene back in the 40's, 50's, and 60's from different sources and notably how much Johnny Carson hated women comics! A good read for the comedy lover.

Fantastic book on the origins of female comedians. Very nicely put together and very easy reading.
