I tend to get caught up in ads. I'm the consumer they are geared at. An ADD buyer, purchasing on impulse and never using the product because I'm on to the next thing. In the case of this book, I was reminded of my purchase when it hit my doorstep. I have had a stressful and emotional week, losing a dear friend to cancer too soon, so I picked it up and began to read it. Clinging to each page like a life line. I am in transition and this book was just what I needed. I am laughing out loud and shedding tears at the stuff it is bringing up. Kyle Cease is also a speaker and I honestly feel like I'm sitting at an in person lecture, audience of one. Over the years I have tried to address my fear of letting go to "their story" and once I finish this book, I believe I'm on my way to discovering or acknowledging MY "calling" or purpose. If I ever meet this author, I would give him a big hug. He has started something for me no therapy, support group, or book has ever done.

I loved it and didn't like it at the same time, but that's the only way it could be. Let me try to explain..It's written in a stream of consciousness style to great effect. And really, if you're writing a book about authenticity, isn't that way to do it? There are 100 other books on self-help, positive psychology and growth out there with organized chapters, bullet points, introductory paragraphs and summaries. It's what I'm used to, what I'm comfortable with, and what I was expecting. I was wrong!This book is raw, (I'm guessing) unedited, and feels "real". Straight from the heart. Yes, it's esoteric, yes it's hard to follow at times, but the message is authentic, and if you allow yourself to relax and let go of how a book "should be" this book could change your life.And I love that.

Kyle, you are awesome. First, I want to start with that. I found this from an ad on Facebook, and your video drew me in, and I knew there was something to it. I kept scrolling by the ad until I felt this strong pull. I clicked the ad, watched the video, and I was hooked. I've been looking for something this real, authentic, and amazing. So, I ended up purchasing this book for the video, and I knew the book would be just as good.I'm also an author, so I laughed my head off at all the stuff you wrote that wouldn't be "correct" to put in a book, but it made it all the more fun for me to read. I talked about this book to everyone. I posted pictures on FB, and laughed so hard at the baby taco.Is this book the BEST written book. Hell, no. But, it is the most realistic, authentic book out there. There were pages where I was laughing, and pages that had me thinking super deeply. I got inspired to dig deeper and deeper into my true authentic self. This message is spot on for me, and I can see its not for everyone. But, seriously it's hilarious, deep, and one of the best books I've ever read. I've read a ton! It was the way you drew me in Kyle. I didn't want to STOP reading it. That's rare for me. Non-fiction I usually take forever, but I read this book in about a week.Let me tell you what I loved:Kyle is super authentic. He's probably a bit ADD, but that's what made it super hilarious and entertaining to read. I've never had a book with a baby taco for a chapter, I'll tell you that much! I love how he teaches you to tap into your heart, and get beyond the mind noise. I love Eckhart Tolle, and I know he jokes how if Eckhard Tolle and Jim Carry had a baby, he'd be it. That's super true! I love laughing, and I love depth, and this book perfectly balanced that for me. In fact, I'd read it again. I know I'd get more and more from it. I'd love to go to conference with Kyle, because I know it'd change my life. Guys, if you need a book to lighten up, make you think, and just REAL, this is it.What I didn't like:I liked it all. LOL. I loved this book as you can tell. If you are a grammar Nazi, you won't like this because Kyle uses weird stuff sometimes. That's what makes it funny though. You gotta be able to handle the goofball flow of the book.READ THIS!

I rarely write critical reviews, and I only made it halfway through this book. My sister bought it for me and told me she was familiar with the author's comedic work. I was surprised this book got published, and I feel bad saying that because the author goes into detail about how much bravery it took for him to embark on writing a book (which I thought was sweet and honest to share). I didn't find it inspiring and that was why I wanted to read it. I wanted to read about how failure can motivate and I think it's there a bit, but too many side stories and not enough substance.I wanted to like it, and I'm proud of the author for facing his fears, but this was just not interesting and I can't count on one hand how many times I have read half a book and not finished. Perhaps if you are a fan of the author you will enjoy it.

This book is perfectly imperfect! I love that Kyle is so open, funny, vulnerable, expressive, and inspiring! Don’t expect ‘7 steps’ to follow to be successful on the pages inside. This is Kyle unfiltered and real and sharing from his heart. I have been watching his videos for many months and was looking forward to reading this. It was definitely a different experience. It felt more personal. My heart has expanded SO much. The lid has been blown off my limited mind. My dreams have also become CRYSTAL CLEAR after a long time of second guessing myself! Learn how to walk through fear, laugh. Learn to let go of old beliefs, laugh again. Learn how amazing you are, laugh some more! This is comedy and transformation, helloooooo! Laugh and change your life at the same time! For real.

I kept reading this book because I was in a book club. The book is pretty bad though. He's very repetitive and tries to be funny, it kind of feels like he was just trying to fill the pages.

I thoroughly enjoy watching Kyle's videos. But the book is a bunch of disjointed ramblings that have nothing to do with much of anything. First book I ever tossed in the trash. And boy, am I sad about that. :-(

Ever get stuck in a conversation with someone that thinks they're hilarious and original but really they're just immature and likely exaggerating every tale they tell? And you can't get a word in between their ramblings to end the conversation? and they're incapable of reading your body language and are oblivious to how uncomfortable you are?If you'd pay for that experience then this book is for you. Otherwise save your money.

Last year I bought this author's hilarious LET'S PRETEND THIS NEVER HAPPENED when it was a Daily Deal and enjoyed it enormously. I didn't know that she had written a second book until it showed as a Daily Deal and I grabbed it and stopped reading the book I was in the middle of to wolf it down. (Figuratively speaking, of course.)Her first book is a memoir of her bizarre childhood. It's presented in a comic manner and I suspect that many readers will be upset to learn that her life hasn't been non-stop laughs. Not that this one isn't wet-your-pants funny in parts, but Ms. Lawson's main goal here is to discuss her life-long battle with depression and she does so in a way that's peculiarly her own. (And sometimes just peculiar.)Mental illness is the Final Frontier of medicine and we still can't fully convinced ourselves that it's not "all in your head." Of course, it IS "all in your head" but that doesn't make it less debilitating or easier to treat. The societal costs of untreated or poorly treated mental illness in terms of suicide, unemployment or underemployment, incarceration, etc. has never been calculated. Maybe we just don't want to think about it.This is an inside look at chronic depression from a woman who has struggled all of her life and will continue to do so. Barring a miracle cure, there are no happy endings for those with chronic depression. But there can be happy days and hours and minutes in between the misery and Jenny valiantly grabs every one of them and savors it. If you have ever suffered from depression or if you love someone who has, you should read this book.I remember reading LET'S PRETEND and thinking that it must have been uncomfortable growing up with a father whose idea of parenting was waking his little daughters up and telling them that he had brought them a pet squirrel. The "pet" was road-kill that Dad had gutted and was using as a hand puppet. Not exactly the sort of childhood memory that makes it into the eulogy, right? But it turns out that having a taxidermist father has some advantages after all. When her stuffed road-kill raccoon suffers a Las Vegas-related accident, Pop was able to fashion new hands and feet for it. [Incidentally, road-kill isn't really a literary "theme" in these books. It's just something that Texas has a LOT of.]This family has been given enough lemons to keep a lemonade stand going indefinitely. I admire this lady (and her wonderful husband!) more than I can say. She is a beacon of hope for those who live in the shadows. God bless her.

I've read amazing reviews about this book and that's why I bought it. Not my cup of tea, I fail to find it funny or entertaining. For me it's just the author trying too hard to be funny.

I loved this book. I'm not one who readily laughs out loud, but this had me giggling helplessly. Not once or twice, but a LOT. And I'm mentally ill, too, so this book was a wonderful vacation for me from having to deal with stuff I don't have enough spoons for. I never encountered anyone who thinks in tangential, progressively absurd streams of consciousness before, JUST LIME ME!!And I need to respond to reviews that were bitchy about the author's "luxury" of not being able to get out of bed, and what was perceived as name-dropping: Mental illness is not all created equal. I only say that because my FIRST impulse was to scold those idiots for judging a sick person by well-person rules, but then I thought that was mean. Maybe they are just less unwell. Personally, I've had days when I couldn't leave my cocoon, and there's nothing luxurious about it. It's hell. And hey, wow, a famous person knows some other famous people, who were so cool they helped her! That's name-dropping?Maybe if you're healthy, or if you're in denial, or you're just a judgmental boob, this book won't be funny or work at all for you. I feel sorry for you, because Jenny (I feel like we're on a first-name basis now), is a kick-ass, genuine, smart, hilarious survivor you'd be blessed by if you had any sense.

CAUTION - do not read this on an airplane when people are trying to sleep around you. do not drink water while reading. you will laugh out loud and wake people up and/or (probably both) spit out your water onto your kindle! happened to me. just a warning!Jenny Lawson's second book does not disappoint. If you are a fan of funny things, or if you have suffered from mental illnesses (or know someone who does) this will hit you in all the right places. it will tickle your funnybone, and at times it might make you tear up. i had quite a range of emotions just in the first few chapters. in fact, i haven't even finished it yet but i am confident that it deserves more than 5 stars. i am going to write a note to Amazon, picketing for more than 5 stars! - this is at least 6 stars worth of funny!!!!you do not need to read Jenny's first book to jump into this one, in case you were wondering, however, i strongly suggest reading it to get a lot of references that she discusses and to get a better background on her family and upbringing. it will give you the back story on Beyonce the chicken, and also taxidermy. you may even want to head over to her blog (thebloggess.com) for a little taste of her humor and insight.i also suggest to read the entire book including the preface and such that you might normally skip over. this book is great, and i cannot wait for her next one!!!! i also suggest getting the hard copy over kindle because i am a little mad that i don't have the cute Rory cover to look at!PS- tip- when Jenny travels to do book signings and such, she often stops in the airport bookstores and signs copies! follow her on instagram to see where she is doing mystery signings to get yourself a backup copy!

Save your money. The author tries desperately to be funny and falls short about 98% of the time. Her insistence that “crazy is cute” is at best annoying, and at worst really very offensive to all the people who don’t get to make fun of their mental illnesses. We chose this book for book club and every person, to the person, hated it.
