Pretty good read. I'm not much of a history buff but had always been curious to learn more detail about the old west and how the history of conflict with the natives unfolded. I'm glad I started with this - it was fascinating to read a famous warrior's story in (pretty much) his own words. It was interesting to read Geronimo's descriptions of native traditions including rich creation stories, festivals and rites of passage, and battle and raiding. Geronimo himself attests to things like how warriors were not obliged with any moral boundaries toward anyone outside their own tribe, tribes they have close relations with, or others who've managed to reach a friendly understanding with their tribe. (So raiding and marauding white pioneers on the plains at random was not taboo.) It kind of reminded me of (what little I know about) the ancient European tribal systems such as the Vikings and the Goths. It was also interesting to learn about their justice system, in which warriors who can't/won't follow the unwritten order of things in a tribe are kicked out, then often band together as outcasts. It was to these outlaws he attributed atrocities such as live scalpings and torturing captives for kicks. Assuming he was telling the truth that would explain a lot about possible precipitous misunderstandings between the tribes and the US government regarding native-white relations on the plains and how they affected the course of US history. It's a pretty quick read; I definitely recommend it.

Portions of this story were apparently edited by the person to whom they were told, and other portions are labeled as being his own unedited version, particularly parts that were highly critical of high ranking military personnel. But I expect that this is mostly so that the person recording Geronimo's story would not get in trouble for the criticisms Geronimo made of officers who made treaties with the Apaches that were not completely kept in most cases by the people who were responsible for protecting and supplying the Apache people who agreed to the treaties, and in a few cases the outright treachery where leaders who surrendered were killed and occasionally whole groups that surrendered were slaughtered.Very believable account overall of escalating violence as interaction between first Apache and Mexicans increased, while originally there was little contact with "whites" North of the Mexican border. Later the same pattern repeated north of the Mexican border. Finally Geronimo tried to arrange a treaty with General Miles that he believed would be kept well enough that his people could live adequately protected under it and that the United States would do at least most of what they had promised. This treaty was not fully kept in Geronimo's opinion, but his own people fared better under it than many other Native Americans, so to that extent it was successful.President Theodore Roosevelt had to order that Geronimo was allowed to tell his story in his own words and his white friend was allowed to write it down and publish it, and even then certain bits critical of the United States were apparently edited out, and other parts that are critical of the United States are identified as being Geronimo's personal opinion and not necessarily accurate.Still, we are very lucky to have this much information of these events from this point of view.Recommend this book to anyone interested in American History, and to many readers who just like a good story.

A better title might be "Geronimo: In his own words". I am giving 4 stars because of the poor quality of the transcription, not the content of the story. While the observations and disclaimers of the narrator irritated me at times, they served as a reminder of the culture of the times. My father was born in 1912, not far from Fort Sill. I grew up in Arizona in the '50's hearing about Geronimo and his exploits from family friends who had lived on the Apache reservation. This was the first time I understood the chronology of many of these events. It appears to me that there is enough blame to go around. It would be a good thing if the true story of Geronimo was more widely taught and appreciated. Personally, I think he might have been flattered to think that his name is invoked when paratroopers bail out of an airplane, and stealth operations are planned.

This new series is going to be fun! Mary works for an eccentric wealthy man who is competitively and discreetly collecting rare artifacts. He sends Mary to offer Brodie a job as a courier; he will drive to the destination, she will handle the payment and receipt of the object. But when Mary first meets Brodie, he doesn't make a good impression. She immediately decides she would rather work with his brother. Too bad, her boss is set on Brodie.Mary prides herself on her professionalism and self-control, but Brodie constantly pushes her buttons trying to break through the wall she has erected. And then there is his dog Howler, a 90-pound rescue that accompanies Brodie everywhere, including on their car trips. As Mary gets to know Brodie better he begins to chip away at her defenses, and Brodie's feelings for Mary start to change as he begins to see through those defenses.I loved the interplay between these two, his teasing was hilarious, always pushing her buttons to get a reaction. It takes a while to get to know Mary, but in the last part of the book she seems to blossom. The villain in this book was really weird, but he was even funny at times, in a disturbed way.

This book did not read much like past books I have read by ms. Foster.The story line seemed very thin. The character of Mary wasn't very appealing. When she wasn't feeling sorry for herself, she was mentally whining about her upbringing. It just got old and boring. I can't see myself buying the next book in the series either. The story just wasn't that good. I doubt the next will be any better.

Lori Foster has done it again! She has this wicked way of winding a leading man around our heart that has us swooning and turning the pages faster and faster just to see more of him! Brodie was simply a delight to read. He's cocky, but adorable ... funny, yet endearing ... just an all around great guy! The touch of intrigue was just enough to keep me invested in the story. I wasn't overjoyed with the strange collection part of the story, but the character connection and overall love of seeing them together was enough to make me overlook a slightly dragging in parts plot. Overall, I really enjoyed Brodie and Mary and I look forward to Jack's story!Mary Daniels enjoys working for her eccentric boss in obtaining the rare collectibles he seeks, but this time she's not so sure he's making a good choice! When she shows up to hire the driver at Mustang Transport that he insists upon, she's not impressed! He's blatantly hung-over, has a woman hanging all over him in public, and just doesn't seem like he's going to get the job done.Brodie Crews needs this job in order to keep his business running smoothly, so he's not about to let this uppity woman ruin things for him. If her boss wants him, he's got him ... and he'll do the job correctly! Then again, riding around in the car for hours with this woman just might be too much temptation for him. Yes, she's wicked controlling .. but he finds it kind of hot! It's all fun and games until danger shows up in their rear-view mirror, then they need to play to win!

I just loved Brodie Crews and Mary Daniels. Brodie is secure enough, in his ‘alpha-ness’, to be gorgeous and charming and sexy and have a heart of gold without being in your face. Seriously, what I loved the most about him was that he protects those he loves, rescues an abused dog, but still gives Mary room to make her own decisions and be his partner in all things. He even loves his mother!When these two meet, sparks fly. The ‘meet-cute’ is hilarious, I think for the reader and everyone BUT Mary (!), and so they do not start off on the right foot. But as the story unfolds, they become an unbreakable team and we discover layer after layer for both these characters. A very big part of the story is that rescue dog, Howler. OMG, the way Brodie takes care of this dog? It will make you laugh and make you want to hug ‘em both. Brodie built a special harness for Howler; he talks baby-talk to the dog; he worries about Howler’s separation anxiety; he even pretends he is eating the dog’s kibble because Howler would much rather eat people-food – the subterfuge seems to work. In return, Howler is such a loyal moosh, and he takes to Mary about as fast as Brodie did. This team of three is wonderful to read. I couldn’t wait to see how they would accomplish the next thing on their agenda.I’ve enjoyed Ms. Foster’s heroes and heroines for years and Driven to Distraction doesn’t disappoint. I really loved the developing relationship between Mary and Brodie. I loved the secondary characters. And I loved Howler. This book really kept my attention and I read it almost straight thru, except for some much needed sleep.

This book was so much fun to read! Can I just say Brodie melts my heart. He is a bodacious mix of sexy, funny, laid back but with a core of steel, protective package of hotness. Yes I can!Mary (Red) is so straight laced, but at times when Mary drops her barriers, there is another side of her. I absolutely love watching Brodie push her buttons. Mary has a hard time with anyone giving her affection or care. When Mary slowly reveals her past, Brodie is determined to show her just what caring and loving is. Brodie and his dog Howler, super cute when he talks baby talk to Howler. There are so many great lines, and scenes on every page. The sexy scenes are hot and perfect.There are so many delicious Alpha males Ms. Foster writes, but I have to move Brodie to the top of my favorites.Another hit for Ms. Foster, and I’m so looking forward to Slow Ride book 2 in The Road to Love series.I received an ARC from NetGalley, and this is my honest review.

Let me first say that the story itself is good, but not the best ever. It still earns five stars because of the beautiful, heartbreaking, wonderful way it explores Prudence's life experience after being raped. Her fear, her withdrawal, her hopelessness is expressed in an incredibly sensitive manner that manages to break your heart without making you pity her.The way John responds to Prudence, the way that he treats her, and the way that he helps her learn to feel strong and safe and confident again is as heart-healing as her ordeal is heartbreaking.Rape in romance is not something you encounter very often and when you do, it's usually referred to in a vague way or as something that happens to a secondary character. The way it is dealt with in this book is so beautiful. Watching Prudence heal, with John's help but with her own determination, was an incredible experience for me as a reader.Again, while the story itself was original and interesting, it would not have left an impact. It engaged me so completely on an emotional level, though, that I will never forget this book.

I have loved the characters from the first book in the series, however in this book I believe Ms. Rodale has taken them to a new level. Her delicate, yet truthful dealings with such a taboo subject, was amazing. As with the previous books, we are once again united with all of the characters we have come to love. But, in this book, we get to finally understand Prudence and her reluctance for love. John is also an amazing man, sensitive, strong and his patience with Prudence sets him above all others. Ms. Rodale has skillfully woven this story around the previous two books, filling in the gaps that had been missing in Prudence’s life. Her friends Emma and Olivia stay true to form, supportive and loving of their dearest friend, while showing true compassion when Prudence finally reveals her deepest, darkest secret. Radcliff and Ashbrook are not only protective of Emma and Olivia, but of Prudence their wives childhood friend. In this book, ones position in life is clearly defined, yet our characters move beyond that to defy the ton in support of true love. In addition we once again get a glimpse of our favorite editor Mr. Knightly and his support for not only a woman’s right but that of a man’s ability to rise above his station. In the end, you will be sad to say farewell to these characters, but you will be able to reread this book as the others over and over again.

I read the first two books in this series and LOVED them! So I was really excited to read this one....until I found out what Prudence had experienced. I couldn't even get through half of the book. Putting Prudence in the same inn as the person who raped her so much just seemed unnecessary. I'm sure this book has a happy ending, but it's still not something I want to read about in my spare time. Speaking as a victim of a similar crime, if I had known what this was about, I never would have purchased it.Be forewarned, this book has some very dark aspects to it and deals with a very difficult subject matter.

I really tried to love this book. I just found it to be hard to get through.It is a very dark book, and given the subject material that is totally understandable and acceptable. You cannot have sunshine and rainbows all the time, I get that. And bad things happen to good people, I get that too. But this book was just depressing to me.Then there is the whole flashback thing. I am not a fan of flashbacks. Sometimes it is necessary and in this book it was needed. But the insertion of these flashbacks just ruined the flow of the story for me. And if that wasn't enough to there are totally random flash forwards that are totally out of the blue. The first one I read, I was like WTH was that. I actually thought the book might have a formatting issue. It was that random and out of context.Prudence is a tortured soul. And I tried to empathize with her. Never having had been the horror she had, I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt. But for the firs half of the book she is rigid and then when she has an encounter with her tormentor and what happens after that was totally unbelievable to me. But, I still tried to give her a pass.The final nail in the coffin for me was her reaction when the truth about John finally came out. She was such a snob! After everything this man did for her and that was her reaction?!? I actually hated her at that moment. She did not deserve John!I loved John and he is the only reason this book is getting three stars instead of one. He had secrets and he did lie about who he was (but so did she!) but he wasn't a bad man and he didn't really hurt anyone with his deception. So for Prudence to treat him the way she did, pissed me off. She does redeem herself, but her initial reaction just turned me off.So between the darkness, flashbacks, flash forwards and her reaction. I just didn't care for this book.

Loved the novel...very realistic....Some reviewers have said that how Pru reacted when the truth came out wasn't realistic...I beg to differ. It was a natural gut reaction. The only problem I had was a very silly one; the epilogue. All three friends together with their children...Emma's daughter is off at the school but her name was changed. In the first book it was Agatha (after the 'old bird' from whom Emma won 'the games'). I was sad it wasn't the same....silly, I know!

Best book in the Wallflower Trilogy, easily. They're all good, but this was a cut above. I LOVED the ending and how it completely inverted the normal romance trope. I won't give it away because it's meant as a twist, but trust me, it's good.The issues the characters dealt with in this book were very intense and well handled. I'd recommend reading this even if you aren't interested in the rest of the Wallflower series. Sometimes I get regency fatigue from all the similar storylines, but this book snapped me right out of it.

If you're traveling the Rhine this book is a must have.

Vintage publication, but the castles haven't changed much in the past 100 years... Great reference with interesting tidbits about several of the many castles along the Rhine river in Germany. A worthy read.

While this book is not a colorful coffee table book,it is a nice small guide to castles along the Rhine river in Germany.The text gives just a tease and the pictures are black and white so I would not buy this if you are looking for an oversized book of bright beautiful pictures or in depth information. But I find it a nice guide filled with just enough info that I didn't know before reading it.

More telling is Johanna Schopenhauer, the philosopher's Mutter, who wrote in 1816, "Imagine, in addition to the sublime splendour of natural beauty, the many picturesque ruins of old castles gazing sternly down from rocky eminences into the valley. I took the railway trip once every week or two from Holland, on the weekends, and this is an older, faded book that should never leave your favorite shelf. Aslam a'lekomSuch a strong book in Kuwait history parallel compared to Qatar .Dr Jill do a great job because the information about Kuwait development plan at the early fifties.I like to thank her for her prediction to Iraq invasion to Kuwait at 1990

Overall good book in helping understand how oil wealth and domestic power structures intercepted. Now a bit dated as it ends with aftermath of Kuwait's liberation in 1991. Some aspects of author's analysis at odds with my personal knowledge of certain developments in Kuwait.

This book used Qatar and Kuwait as a compare and contrast to provide some deep understanding of the gulf. It is a great boo, but can be hard to follow at times because its so condensed. I read this book for a graduate course on the Arab gulf. It is an older version so it does not speak about the aftermath of the Kuwait-Iraq war. But overall a good read.

I read this book after one of its authors, Charles Murray, was harassed by a mob at Middlebury College earlier this year. I wanted to understand what the fuss was about. What I found was an amazingly well researched, lucidly written and honest book that pulls no punches. It has changed my view of the world in a profound way. Truly outstanding.

This book has been on my list for a long time. I can only applaud Drs Herrnstein and Murray in their meticulous and frankly brave effort in reporting on a very difficult topic in American discourse. Despite the fact they go through huge pains to present the data as scientifically and bias free as possible, the backlash they've received is truly sad. One of the things that struck me while reading this is how good a job they do of presenting difficult scientific discussions and statistics in a way that is surprisingly easy to understand and read for a lay person. I thought I'd be slogging through 500 pages and found the book was reading much easier and quicker than I would've thought possible. Kudos to them for making this accessible to everyone.Everyone should read this book. It addresses so many important and sensitive topics that our country needs to address out in the open rather than hide away as taboo or "not worthy of discussion". Similarly, many people wonder why it's research that should be or needs to be done in the first place. As they lay out in the book very well, this could have great impact on all aspects of how we run government and education. This also provides ample evidence and studies to back findings and positions that are often difficult to discuss but should be set straight to the general public. The truth is always preferable to a comfortable fairy tale we tell ourselves to make ourselves feel better.

An amazing book with much careful research and certainly interesting results. Sad that some of the topics are taboo in our media as there is much helpful insight for improved policy decisions. Lots of insight into many cultural problems. I especially found research on what works in a family and what doesn't. Definitely not a fast read but I found it quite clear despite my limited knowledge about statistics.

The subtitle is "Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life." Although you would not glean as much from the vicious attacks that have been leveled against this book since its publishing, the major thesis is that intelligence is highly correlated with success in America. This applies not only to financial success but also educational success, marital success, and happiness in general.This is only a commonsense observation. People who can figure out how to deal with life's problems are happier. As I write this I am having a fight with Social Security to receive my pension and a fight with the bank to get a deposit credited to my account. Fighting this kind of bureaucratic battle takes intelligence. People without the ability to argue their case, write a letter, and call their Congressman lose out. This same kind of intelligence, needless to say, is valuable to employers and leads to success at work.One of the observations is that as American society has become more mobile, like kinds of people tend to group together. There are enclaves of high income, highly intelligent people in Boston, New York, San Francisco and Washington DC. Lesser enclaves exist in the three cities area of North Carolina, Austin Texas, Madison Wisconsin and other university towns. More than that, the upper strata congregate very predictably in certain neighborhoods, comfortably separated from the minorities and other hoi polloi in their neighborhoods.This results in what the authors call "cognitive stratification." Young, mobile and affluent people seek each other's company and marry each other. The society is naturally separating itself by intelligence. A topic that Murray in particular addresses elsewhere is that even though the cognitive elite have the wherewithal to raise families, they don't. Those that don't, do. The result is that the world is getting dumber, summed up quite well in Richard Lynn's Dysgenics: Genetic Deterioration in Modern Populations.The discussion of race which has made this book infamous does no more than reiterate what psychometricians have consistently discovered since intelligence first started to be measured a century ago. Black Americans, on average, score one standard deviation lower on IQ tests than whites: averages of 85 versus 100. What they also find, but which does not excite controversy, is that Ashkenazi Jews average 115, Americans of Northeast Asian descent average about 107, American Indians average about 90, and Hispanic Americans about the same.It is worth a paragraph to describe what intelligence is. Intelligence tests measure the ability to cope in a modern society. They are designed to be independent of culture. Some of them are even independent of language. They produce highly reproducible results – there are a wide range of intelligence tests available, and all of them will yield pretty much the same results for a given individual.In practical terms, a one standard deviation difference in population averages means that only one person in six in the lower population has an intelligence at or exceeding the average of the higher group. Only one white person in six is as smart as the average Ashkenazi Jew, and only one black and six is as intelligent as the average white. The bell curve explicitly predicts that there will be extraordinarily smart, and extraordinarily dumb people in every population. This is only common sense – we see exceptional Blacks such as Paul Robison, Clarence Thomas and Thomas Sowell who far exceed almost all of their white peers. On the other hand, you run across some dumb Jews. But not very many.Intelligence is highly correlated with success in school, income, health and happiness. This deserves a side note on statistics. A high correlation in the social sciences is not extraordinarily high. In round numbers, intelligence explains about 25% of the difference in levels of success. Other factors, such as personality, good looks, a stable family, being born rich, and so on certainly play a part. Statistically, however, none of these are as important as intelligence.As I write this review in 2016 the question of intelligence is even more pertinent. Technology is eliminating routine jobs at an alarming pace. Typists and grocery check out clerks are becoming a thing of the past. The target now seems to be drivers, paralegals and others who do fairly routine work. It is simply easier and more accurate to have machines – often computers – do the work than to pay people. At the same time, as noted in Lynn's book above, the intelligence of nativeborn Americans is declining. The problem is compounded by the fact that America is bringing in large numbers of immigrants from the populations with lower intelligence.Murray and Herrnstein did not offer a very optimistic conclusion or a realistic way out of this problem. There does not appear to be one. It has only gotten worse since their publication. In hindsight, the United States appears to be worse off for not having paid attention to this book when it came out, just as it did not pay attention to the Moynahan and Coleman reports in the 1960s. As things collapse as I write this, during the Clinton – Trump election campaign, it appears that the chickens are coming home to roost.

(That's the first time I've written an all-caps sentence in a review.)This book is brilliance above brilliance. It is dry, academic writing (and only one section out of four deals with race and IQ, and only a small part of that section -- so much for all of the one-star reviews deriding it as if it were nothing else, and, even if it were, as if the truth must not be admitted, must not be spoken, if it fitteth the narrative not), but, in the best tradition of such dry academic writing, is packed with information on every page. The book is an eloquent defence of the truth of hereditarianism vis-a-vis intelligence, and conclusively demonstrates that America is stratifying -- has stratified -- and will be stratified in to a society of classes based not on descent-qua-descent, or aristocracy (as they should be), or the warrior ethic, but upon a largely-inherited intelligence, which is distributed extraordinarily unevenly across various 'population groups'.To the egalitarian theorist, this book is heresy -- it thesis heresy -- its authors apostates who must be burned, for they give the lie to the inane notion that all men are equal in all ways.One-quarter star deducted because the authors don't draw out the implications of their (proved) thesis, and, in a display of the cognitive dissonance engendered even amongst (especially amongst?) the learned by the dogmata of multiethnicism and the multicult and cult of diversity, show that they may not even be aware of such implications.

He said his favorite part was the picture with the peacocks. I then had my eight-year-old great nephew read it to me while answering the addition questions. They both enjoyed this book as will all children within the intended age group and even those a little younger. Her works include picture books, and biographies, as well as many non-fiction titles about animals, sports, insects, planets, and various science topics. During an earlier engineering career, she worked on Delta rockets and designed automotive braking systems. Ms. Slade lives near Chicago with her husband, two children, and their tiny dog, Corduroy.About the illustrator: Joan Waites spent 15 years as a neo-natal intensive care nurse prior to studying illustration and launching her freelance career. Children love to look at pictures of animals, so this book is a wonderful way to introduce them both to the animals themselves, including elephants, pea fowl, monkeys, boas, brown bears, kangaroos, zebras, giraffes, penguins, and fruit bats, and to basic adding facts too!Suzanne Slade's rhyming text combines with Joan Waites's realistic illustrations to take youngsters on a trip through the zoo not only to learn all about the animals but also to count them. As usual with Sylvan Dell books, four pages in the back have more information in the "For Creative Minds" section, which includes more material on addition and an animal matching activity. There are also related websites, interactive quizzes, and teaching activities on Sylvan Dell's website to help parents and teachers. What's New at the Zoo is certainly an animal adding adventure.
