This is the first edition of the women’s motorcycling book where I first read about Bessie Stringfield, the African American Harley rider who was a standout for being so brave in the 1930s and ‘40s. Imagine being a black woman out there riding a motorcycle by herself in that era? Bessie’s true story was first told in this book; the author knew her personally.Later in 2002, the story was reprinted with the author’s permission on the American Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum website. Bessie was inducted to the Hall of Fame that year. She had died in 1993, but Bessie's story still lives on because of the seed that was planted in this book.“Hear Me Roar†also has stories about dozens of other female pioneers of motorcycling. Like Dot Robinson, a white woman and another Hall of Famer who was tough as nails in endurance races, yet she was also prim and proper, wearing pink outfits and riding a pink motorcycle when cruising.This book was the first to trace the history of early female bikers like these outstanding women. Then it goes on to cover the explosion in women riding motorcycles in the 1980s and into the 1990s, looking at how female bikers are portrayed in the media and in fashion. No other author had ever looked at all this before.It is a well written, thorough book, giving new views on the subject, in a century-long window of time from the early 1900s up to the mid-1990s. It has a dated resource section in the back with women’s motorcycling clubs, many of which are still around and have grown in numbers.
It wasn't what I expected, but someone else may enjoy it.
This is another great book for women who ride and for women who are interested in riding. Great images, very good content. Well written and inspiring.
