Review

"An amazing book. An instant classic. Staff Sergeant Brown is a true guardian who saved countless lives with supernatural marksmanship skill in a moment of great need, but he has also proven himself to be a true warrior-wordsmith who will save even more lives, as the lessons from this book are learned and applied in our current violent times. Absolutely "required reading" for law enforcement and mental health professionals, but also profoundly valuable for anyone who wants to understand violence and mental illness in our society today." -Lt Col Dave Grossman (US Army, retired) Author of On Combat, On Killing, and Assassination Generation "There are specific lessons in this book that can help us to prevent lethal tragedy. Lessons for bosses, subordinates, and coworkers. Lessons for law enforcement, and for psychologists, and for human resources personnel. But there are also general lessons for all of us that can save lives, though perhaps not so dramatically nor so heroically as Andy Brown saving uncounted lives when he 'rode to the sound of the guns.'" -From the Foreword written by Massad Ayoob"In vivid and thoroughly researched detail, Andy Brown masterfully weaves two tragic stories ... In parallel accounts he craftily weds the stories of the vivid dysfunction of a troubled young airman and the reckless arrogance of a senior officer and aviator. As Andy Brown clearly displays, if warnings had been heeded, the behavior of both men would not have led to disastrous ends. ... this is an important and well-written read." -Gregory K. Moffatt, Ph.D., Author of Blind-Sided: Homicide Where it is Least Expected and A Violent Heart "Rich in fascinating detail and page-turning narration, Warnings Unheeded delivers memorable insights into the kind of slaughter that so often fills news cycles these days, and the resilience heroes need to fight back from the emotional toll of protecting other lives." -Charles Remsberg, Author of the Street Survival book series

Andy, I write this review from the perspective as "One who was there". I was involved in both the Hospital Shooting and the B-52 crash for which I received Commendation medals for both.Brother you hit a Grand Slam Home Run! When I first got your book I jumped to the chapters of the incidents I was directly involved in and you captured the very essence of both tragedies with unbelievable clarity. After a little teasing from you :-) I began reading from page one. It was then I began to understand and appreciate the title of your book "Warnings Unheeded". You skillfully took your investigative training and put them to work. I love how you choreographed the history of Dean Mellberg and Bud Holland together to demonstrate how their dangerous behaviors developed, were nurtured and allowed to manifest into tragedy. You also brought out how key Command Authority were in a position to intercede and have an influence with these two but THEY failed to act in a decisive manner but rather THEY made excuses for them.I also greatly appreciated how you remained objective without demonizing Mellberg or Holland and you allowed the reader to come to their own conclusion that both of them were out of control and they were inexcusably allowed to continue their dangerous behavior. I think any normal person reading your book would come to the same conclusions. These men should have been stopped long before these tragedies occurred. I have to admit when I was reading your book I wasn't sure how I was going to react. I knew it would bring up some old memories and emotions. It did in fact do just that. It brought up memories from the depths of my soul to the point of tears. Your book spoke to me loudly for which I am indebted to you for. Most importantly you concluded with letting your readers know that there is ways to deal with grief, that life must go on (and will) and how you choose to deal with the grief will reflect how you will live the rest of your life.Andy, I stood shoulder to shoulder with you then and I proudly can say I will still stand shoulder to shoulder with you today. My Friend continue to "Aim High" nothing else will do. :-) The autographed copy of your book I received from you now sits in it's place of honor with those medals received so many years ago. WELL DONE!! Bravo!Kevin Schindler and MWD Basco92nd SPS FAFB

I purchased this book based upon the review by Massad Ayoob on his blog. I was already familiar with the story of the author's heroism in protecting people from the mass murderer at Fairchild AFB from the regular column of Mr. Ayoob published in American Handgunner magazine. This book exceeded my expectations. There is a well known analogy used by people who write about violence, that of the sheep, the wolves, and the sheep dogs. The overwhelming majority of people are good people who go about their lives, who depend for their support and that of their dependents upon their own efforts, and represent no threat to their fellow citizens. There are the wolves, who exist by preying upon the sheep. Most sheep are not prepared to deal with a serious confrontation with a wolf. Finally there are the sheep dogs, those who are prepared to confront wolves. There are sheep dogs like the author who have made it a profession, and swore an oath to protect all sheep, even at the risk of their own lives. There are others for whom being a sheep dog is not a profession, but still a way of life. These are people who have thought about the awful consequences that violent criminal attackers can have on them and those they love. They choose not to be victims, and prepare themselves accordingly.Mr. Brown took his responsibilities as a sheep dog seriously, and took his own time and money to prepare himself beyond what was expected of him by the Air Force. That effort paid off when those skills were needed. People are alive because of him, and Mr. Brown provides valuable lessons in this book for those who choose to be sheep dogs.World events since 1994 have made his example more important. The recruitment of criminals and the psychologically unbalanced by terrorists to launch random violent attacks against the innocent means sheep dogs are needed more than ever.As the book details, another tragedy followed four days later at Fairchild AFB. Mr. Brown devotes half of his text to this one.A number of other reviewers have commented on how well written the book is. I started reading the book before these reviews were posted, and I was struck by the same thing. One reviewer said it was well written for a first book. I do hope that Mr. Brown will continue writing.

After reading this book, I am unable to think of a more appropriate title then “Warnings Unheeded.”More impressive, is the meticulous detail Andy took to ensure the final product is thorough and accurate. The way he weaved two separate incidents, alternating them chronologically by chapters, is a literary work of art.Yes, the book is personal, yet surprisingly objective, and easy to read—hard to put down. Andy writes as if this has always been his niche’ in life.To be honest, the subject matter was a tad tough for me. Dean Mellberg was a client of ours in Social Actions, First Sergeant Jones a very good friend, and Col Wolff was our direct reporting official. However, I walk away from this “collected work” a better person as it was un-expectantly therapeutic in nature for me.Andy’s dedication to research every detail provided me “pieces of the puzzle” I never had. And, no one would have blamed him had this book taken a punitive position against the violent and deeply disturbed perpetrator. Instead, he chose to be fair and balanced throughout the majority of the book—simply providing the unadulterated facts. As I impartially navigate my way through these pages, I could not help but believe these two were destined to meet. To be more accurate, Andy was the only person, fully prepared, to have stopped him. It is as if the Lord equipped him to save countless lives that June day in 1994.I, and my family, are forever grateful to Andy for his heroic actions that day and for this wonderful piece of literature.
