Review

Great protest novels arise in every era: "The Grapes of Wrath," "1984",: The Jungle", and now, "Steam Drills, Treadmills, and Shooting Stars". In this novel, fact and fiction march hand-in-hand together across the American landscape as the ghost of the legendary John Henry haunts Jim Dalton, a corporate lawyer for Standard Coal, and young Henrietta Owens, an activist and mother who captivates the nation with her truth about the environment, the economy, justice and hope. From the ghost of John Henry to the Revolutionary Table, the Tightrope Walking Woman, and the Primetime Gladiator, the Prince of Nothing Who Comes From Nowhere, and the Midwife on the Front Line of Birth and Death, this epic myth of our time stars our selves and our neighbors in an answer to the silent prayers of the American people. This is a protest novel. It is designed to wake-up God in the heavens, shake the devil down in hell and rattle all the people in between. You will have a lot of fun. --Rising Sun Dance and Theater --Rising Sun Dance and Theater"Life is precious, beyond all else, and we are about to lose it.", page 162. "She was lying awake on the eve of human extinction, staring wide-eyed at a blackness that had no end. If she could not wake her fellow citizens up, the darkness of extinction would engulf them forever. No laughter. No sunrise. No songs. Nothing. The dawn would never come to caress a human face again.", page 161. "We need to treat ourselves like a national crisis," she said. "We are one. If our personal lives were in as much pain and turmoil as our country we'd all be sedated and locked away." She choked, because it's true and we are. Her silence echoed onto airwaves and penetrated the ears of listeners across the nation. "Everything we love is at stake," Henrietta said passionately. "We've got to accept that there can be no more life as usual. We need to live life unusual, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!" "It sounds like the trumpeting of a battle cry," the comfortable tenor of the talk show host chuckled. "Not a battle, but a call to action," Henrietta said. "We've got to make change our national pastime and hold protests more regularly than weekend parties," Henrietta urged. "There's a dedicated and hardworking crowd that's been actively trying to address the problems in our country for years and we've got to join them. We have to . . . it's our life!" Henrietta emphasized the last word, trying to imprint the preciousness of existence onto the listeners' minds. "If I could," she continued, "I'd reach out and shake every person in this country and say; stop listening to the TV tell you about America the beautiful . . . get up and be America the beautiful. Make America beautiful. We got energy sources to clean up and skies to clear out and mountaintops to restore. And more than that; we've got a whole new way of life just waiting to be born!" "Like a sick man getting a new lease on life?" the host said. "Yes, and that's the good news. We got a chance to remake ourselves and our whole society, to throw out the old, and bring in something better!" "We're starting to sound like radio evangelists, here," the radio host laughed. "Good," Henrietta answered emphatically. "We're in a dark night of the soul. But as you said, we got a second chance at life, today." "Saved and born again?" the radio host inserted skeptically. "Not saved. We definitely ain't saved yet," Henrietta chuckled, "but we're born again each day from the darkest of nights, and I believe that, if our country can rouse itself to greet the dawn that's coming, we'll not only make it through some tough times, but we'll come flying out the other side into a world we can hardly even imagine!", from page 165. --Rising Sun Dance and TheaterThe mass graves that dot our planet are miniscule when measured against the properly buried citizens who have done nothing. How can they rest in peace, or sleep in peace while still alive, when they stand by doing nothing as atrocities pass by like scenery on the roadside? A hundred thousand years of history's babies have been dropped into mass graves and the cruelly cooing murderers are but specks of dust compared to the mountain ranges of people who stood by doing nothing. Henrietta drew a breath laden with the last breaths of all those who came before us. Their dying words gathered in her chest. -from page 225. Follow us to hear the message of hope, empowerment and love that Henrietta brings alive in this book. This is a book you will want to keep forever and share with everyone you know. --Rising Sun Dance and Theater

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The poetic imagery and character depictions are wonderful examples of the art of writing. In addition, the reader learns of the destruction being done through mountain top removal by the coal industry, the power of one woman to make a difference, and the possibility of transformation in an individual and a society. Rivera Sun paints the truth of our environmental crises, but also the hope and the challenge for all of us. Highly recommend this book.

I simply love this book. It is not just a story 'of' our times, but one FOR our times. Rivera Sun weaves a powerful story of the deep change that focused commitment and action call forth. Henrietta's story reminds us that the action we take matters. As she and her band of fellow activists engage in expressing their care for the future of humanity and the planet, they cannot know who in the world may be ready to heed a new call or if/when that might happen. Yet, they carry on step by step, day by day.In her unique style, Rivera guides us to imagine what goes on behind the scenes in the corporate 'war room' when we the people dare speak our truth in protest to their actions. Rivera does so with humor, lightness, and love - perfect ingredients for the issues that long for new ingredients and new ways of being. It is rare that I find a 'stay up into the wee hours page turner'. And, that's what I found in Steam Drills, Treadmills and Shooting Stars! It's a peace-filled, roller coaster ride to the end - just like life. So, climb aboard, let go of the safety bar, ride with Henrietta and friends, and imagine the world we can create. Let it land in your bones and discover what calls you to action.

A truly excellent read! I just can't get enough of this Author's world view through her writings.

Not easy to read so did not enjoy it!

This book is not only poetic social protest in style, it is a template for taking right action in our times. If we did what Henrietta Owens and the other characters in this book ultimately do, we would arrive at a critical juncture of healing our World on so many levels; in fact, we would likely *achieve* healing of our World and our Selves on multiple levels. The voices of all the characters in this book are so authentic, the scenes so evocative that we are simply carried away on a River of Caring about them and, thus, about our Selves and our World. Rivera writes with words that flow over us like gentle waves with their attending potential for incredible power to create huge shifts and change - change to our lives, change to our ways of thinking, change to our very ways of being. Her words melt in my heart like good chocolate melts in my mouth. Go ahead. Have some good chocolate. Taste this book. Taste the questions and some possible answers for the serious issues that face us now. You won't regret it. I promise you.

This story needs to be heard. But the quality of the writing was poor. I hope "Gray Mountain" does a better job with the subject matter (John Grisham)

In her debut novel, Rivera uses evocative imagery to draw the reader in to a story of social and environmental justice. With the ethical leanings and human compassion of a Barbara Kingsolver novel, and the imagery a Paul Simon solo album, Rivera's created a modern tall tale based in the realities of systemic socioeconomic inequities. All over the US, prisons are filled disproportionately with people of color. The inertia of our economic system creates a race to the bottom, financially and environmentally. The comforts of the 'quality of life' we expect as a median household in America insulate us from having to grapple with the consequences of a system that provides those comforts. These are all realities today, and Rivera uses her characters, Henrietta, Jim, Allie-gator, and others, to weave a story amongst all these realities. You will recognize conversations you've heard in your family, or you've imagined in other people's families. You'll recognize long bus rides, and rural living, suburban lifestyle, and the radical language of activists. You'll recognize the pragmatic or cynical language of businesses protected their interests. And you'll recognize each character's struggles in their own lives. If you enjoy old fashioned story telling and folk tales, but you feel dismayed at things too large for one person to change, then you'll enjoy engaging with this novel. Check it out, it will give you food for thought.

Unique approach to telling the story and approaching the environmental problems we all face as Americans...and Citizens of the World. Very quick, involving and enjoyable read...with recognizable characters we can all relate to. And while the book's solution at first sounds like a sort of fairy tale ending, further consideration makes me believe that it will likely take some sort of ground-up movement to make a significant difference...because top-down solutions are likely never going to happen (not in America anyway). This is a story of our time, written for any reader...and I feel comfortable recommending it.
