Review

"Oxford University Press recently added three of the most acclaimed czarist era novels to its Classics Hardback Collection: Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and War and Peace and Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. Each is a new translation prefaced lucidly by an acclaimed scholar in the field. Both Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, though in increasingly different yet overlapping ways, stirred profound debates on pressing philosophical and spiritual questions, essentially, how to live, especially in a world of accelerating change." - The Shepherd Express

This is a low quality edition for the price, I’ll get that out of the way up front. The pages aren’t sewn, they’re glued like in a paperback. It means the pages will start coming off in a couple of years. It also means it won’t open flat and it won’t stay open. After a single reading the book is becoming deforemed and losing its square shape. It misses the whole point of having a hardback. The cloth feels and looks good when new even though the cover wasn’t well printed, but the color is already starting to rub off after about two months. The paper feels good enough but it could be better, it has that excellent book smell that is never found in high quality paper, the type looks good and is easy to read. This edition is of a quality comparable to the Pengiun Clothbound series. It looks good at first glance but it’s more looks than quality. If that’s all you care about then make sure not to actually read it or move it around too much. For a high quality, durable edition at this price point I highly recomend the Everyman’s Library edition. It’s sewn and the paper feels much better. It uses a dust jacket but there’s simply no comparison in terms of quality.I don’t recommend this edition at all.

I bought this for my friend who cherishes his books. He absolutely loved this present. The nice clean hardcover, the quality pages, just perfect

Good new translation of a classic novel. Oxford World Classics does a nice job with the introduction and notes on the translation.

As described and in wonderful condition! Thank you!

I purchased this book for my husband. He really enjoyed it and we had lots of interesting talks while he was reading the book. He didn’t want to put the book down. :)

I like the canvas cover, how simple and iconic it looks. But I bought this book with little time to read, a month later I'm halfway through the book to find that 10 pages are missing and look purposefully torn out.

This is a very nice edition of Dostoevsky. I don't know Russian so I can't judge the new translation (the translator's other works are highly regarded), but the binding and printing is excellent. Could not think of a classier way to give Dostoevsky as a gift.

Not as lucid as Tolstoy. I expected much better but it was OK. People really don't obsess on little things like his characters did in the story. Back then in roughly Victorian times the subject was nearly always smarmy, melodramatic, mushy, and romantic. There are bigger and better morality issues to consider
