Robert Latkany, M.D., a board-certified ophthalmologist, is the founder and director of the Dry Eye Clinic at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary as well as the Dry Eye Center of New York, the first center in the area devoted to dry eye disorders. Actively involved in dry eye research, he graduated from Columbia University and the Boston University School of Medicine, and now lives and practices in New York City.

This is a great book for dry eye sufferers. I have had dry eye for awhile and am a soft lens contact wearer. The symptoms were severe enough that they severely affected by daily life and golf game. I tried over the counter products but after awhile they did not help. Chapter eight in this book describes a basic home spa treatment that really did away with all of my symptoms. Heat application followed by eyelid massage with a warm q-tip, natural eye drops to washout the eye, and Systane Ultra eyedrops. Next I put in the " Acuvue 1day" contact lenses and take three "Thera Tears Soft gels". I do this every morning and my symptoms are totally gone. This process does not happen overnight and takes a few weeks but it works. The bottom line is zero symptoms of dry eye.
I think this book is a little dated. For example, it talks about the "new" research indicating that hormones might have something to do with dry eyes. (So, babyboomers, do we need research on this?) It did mention a homeopathic combination remedy, which I wouldn't have found otherwise, and which is reasonably effective. And, since one's eye doctor rarely has much to say on the subject, the book is worth getting for its basic information.
There is great information on types of remedies as well as eye drops currently available that may cause other problems due to preservatives. That discussion alone is worth the price of the book.Even one's diet is considered. Also, sources or reasons one may incur Dry Eyes due to other medical or health issues. That gives you material to discuss with your primary doctor and Opthamaligist. Too many times "quick relief" ends up being the wrong move and one's eyesight is too valuable to 'try' things without some evidence of a reason.I found nothing I did not like in this book.
This is a must-read for anyone suffering from dry eye. I read the whole book in one evening. Excellent information explaining the disorder and ways to control/prevent the effects. The Home Eye Spa is now something I practice weekly, plus the explanations and recommendations for certain medications (including over the counter) were very helpful. I have been dealing with dry eye for a year (have used steroids, OTC drops (with and without preservatives), punctal plugs, Restasis, antibiotics, eye compresses, etc.), and just now feel I have control of this problem, and this book helped very much. Thank you, Dr. Latkany!
OK for some basic info, if you are just starting to learn about this condition - but outdated as far as options to heal yourself I think.
The Dry Eye Remedy is a very useful book for everyone, not just people with this problem. It gives helpful information on how to overcome the problem and keep your eyes in a healthy condition. It is a valuable addition to anyone's collection of health related books.
I have done most of what is already in the book, so it defeated the point of purchasing, but at least it is a confirmation to what I have already applied to my eyes.
Nothing new, just eat well eat well and keep hydrated.
