I bought this having little knowledge of php and mysql other than what the combo is used for and what I wanted it to do for me and the projects I had in the works. The progression, for anyone with a working knowledge of programming/coding, is great; there is enough detail and examples for drilling down but it moves at a fairly quick pace. That said, knowing other prog languages and having experience will help greatly, mostly from the standpoint of being able to look at all the code for the examples and being able to extract the theory of what's going in order to adapt it to your own situation. A true beginner will most likely have difficulty with this, but the extensive examples are where the true power lies with these type of books. The syntax and semantics are the referential part (for people who already know how to code), and are also contained within this book, but being able to design an application requires some skill and insight which is hard for a book to teach/impart. Practice and experimentation are the best way.In summary: This book is great, if you know how to code and want to learn how to use php and mysql to develop web-based applications and sites I highly recommend it.

Awesome Book. Would recommend for anyone learning any of the languages they have books for. I own their PHP/MySQL, HTML5/CSS3, and their Javascript/JQuery books. Cannot say enough good about them. Murach's is definitely the way to go.

The book flows very nicely, with gradual progression of concepts and solid use of example code.It is a great resource for teaching yourself how to make websites that are easy to hack. There should be an entire 2-4 pages devoted to the subject of SQL Injection. Instead, you get it mentioned very briefly in the section about prepared statements, with a suggestion that more about such attacks can be found "on the internet". If you're actually planning to code PHP/mySQL websites for anything more than academic purpose, handling the possibility of injection attacks is essential.I'm just glad a I had an expert friend that was here to be shocked at the code I was writing based on my experiences with this book. You can use this book as long as you have someone to fill in the gap on the sql injections.

I must state that normally i hate learning anything about programming. I'd much rather do anything design. Most tech books about programming never keep my interest and seem pretty difficult to read but something about this author's style allows this book to be an easy read for me. I am using this for a PHP course for a web development degree and This allows me to get through the chapters. Some of the chapter may seem repetitive to some but for beginners, this is just what we need. The book assumes no prior knowledge and again, this is great for beginners. Those just needing basics to start with PHP if they programmed before can probably pick up with chapter 2 or 3.

If I had been using PHP for 5+ years, or already know another programming language, this book might have been useful then. For an introductory book to the material, the book assumes way too much about your understanding. It is quite difficult to follow, and the exercises are a lot to unpack before even understanding what needs to be done. Every one of my classmates have had similar issues with the book as well.Again, it may be useful for more advanced users, but I would never recommend it for your first PHP book.

I like the book so far! Great tutorials! Gotta have some real-world projects to be able to grasp the concepts, and this book delivers.

About the Author

Rivera Sun has red hair, a twin sister, and a fondness for esoteric mystics. She went to Bennington College to study writing as a Harcourt Scholar and graduated with a degree in dance. She lives in an earthship house in New Mexico, where she grows tomatoes, bakes sourdough bread, and and drinks pu'erh tea. Rivera has been an aerial dancer, a bike messenger, and a gung-fu style tea server. She is the author of four novels, nine produced plays, two books of poetry and hundreds of articles and radio shows on social justice issues and nonviolent civil action. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The poetic imagery and character depictions are wonderful examples of the art of writing. In addition, the reader learns of the destruction being done through mountain top removal by the coal industry, the power of one woman to make a difference, and the possibility of transformation in an individual and a society. Rivera Sun paints the truth of our environmental crises, but also the hope and the challenge for all of us. Highly recommend this book.

I simply love this book. It is not just a story 'of' our times, but one FOR our times. Rivera Sun weaves a powerful story of the deep change that focused commitment and action call forth. Henrietta's story reminds us that the action we take matters. As she and her band of fellow activists engage in expressing their care for the future of humanity and the planet, they cannot know who in the world may be ready to heed a new call or if/when that might happen. Yet, they carry on step by step, day by day.In her unique style, Rivera guides us to imagine what goes on behind the scenes in the corporate 'war room' when we the people dare speak our truth in protest to their actions. Rivera does so with humor, lightness, and love - perfect ingredients for the issues that long for new ingredients and new ways of being.It is rare that I find a 'stay up into the wee hours page turner'. And, that's what I found in Steam Drills, Treadmills and Shooting Stars! It's a peace-filled, roller coaster ride to the end - just like life. A truly excellent read! I just can't get enough of this Author's world view through her writings.

Not easy to read so did not enjoy it!

This book is not only poetic social protest in style, it is a template for taking right action in our times. If we did what Henrietta Owens and the other characters in this book ultimately do, we would arrive at a critical juncture of healing our World on so many levels; in fact, we would likely *achieve* healing of our World and our Selves on multiple levels. The voices of all the characters in this book are so authentic, the scenes so evocative that we are simply carried away on a River of Caring about them and, thus, about our Selves and our World. Rivera writes with words that flow over us like gentle waves with their attending potential for incredible power to create huge shifts and change - change to our lives, change to our ways of thinking, change to our very ways of being. Her words melt in my heart like good chocolate melts in my mouth. Go ahead. Have some good chocolate. Taste this book. Taste the questions and some possible answers for the serious issues that face us now. You won't regret it. I promise you.

This story needs to be heard. But the quality of the writing was poor. I hope "Gray Mountain" does a better job with the subject matter (John Grisham)

With the ethical leanings and human compassion of a Barbara Kingsolver novel, and the imagery a Paul Simon solo album, Rivera's created a modern tall tale based in the realities of systemic socioeconomic inequities.All over the US, prisons are filled disproportionately with people of color. The inertia of our economic system creates a race to the bottom, financially and environmentally. The comforts of the 'quality of life' we expect as a median household in America insulate us from having to grapple with the consequences of a system that provides those comforts.These are all realities today, and Rivera uses her characters, Henrietta, Jim, Allie-gator, and others, to weave a story amongst all these realities. You will recognize conversations you've heard in your family, or you've imagined in other people's families. You'll recognize long bus rides, and rural living, suburban lifestyle, and the radical language of activists. You'll recognize the pragmatic or cynical language of businesses protected their interests. And you'll recognize each character's struggles in their own lives.If you enjoy old fashioned story telling and folk tales, but you feel dismayed at things too large for one person to change, then you'll enjoy engaging with this novel. Check it out, it will give you food for thought.

Unique approach to telling the story and approaching the environmental problems we all face as Americans...and Citizens of the World. Very quick, involving and enjoyable read...with recognizable characters we can all relate to. And while the book's solution at first sounds like a sort of fairy tale ending, further consideration makes me believe that it will likely take some sort of ground-up movement to make a significant difference...because top-down solutions are likely never going to happen (not in America anyway). This is a story of our time, written for any reader...and I feel comfortable recommending it.

I enjoy reading fables to my students and discussing morals while enriching vocabulary with words that are no longer commonly used. This book is well made and pages are glossy. I wish the stories and pictures had spaces between them instead of appearing like they flow into each other. It is difficult to show the pictures, which are few per fable, because there are usually 2 or 3 fables to a page. The dimensions of the book are not very large. Overall, I would recommend the book. It is chock full of wonderful old fables.

This is the perfect gift for a child! Each story teaches important morals and has beautiful illustrations. I really enjoyed reading these stories as a child and I think my nieces will really enjoy reading them as well.

A book of Aesop's Fables is a perfect Christmas gift for a 7-year-old. I loved Aesop's Fables when I was little and I can't wait to hear what my nephew has to say after he reads a few of the stories as well.

I was happy with the pictures. It is a beautiful book that makes my children want to read.

I'm not finished reading (and listening) to this first Soulless tale, but had to stop long enough to commend Ms. Carriger on her prolific, detailed and hilarious story. I've been rather unwell for several months and everything I've been reading has done nothing to impress my mood. Until discovering this book. Her characters are written so realistically that I can clearly see them. Very well fleshed out. Every scene, mood and thought is fresh. The ENTIRE nature of the lead character is (to me, anyway) very unusual from ANY I've read. The dialogue between the main character and a supporting character is downright hysterical. My first favorite part is the lady-like manner by which our leading lady handles the uncouth assumptions of a supernatural boor. She DOES offer him the opportunity to redeem himself and what results had my laughing so hard I didn't need to work my abs today!I bought the narration so I could do other things as I listened and am in love with the narrator and hope Ms. Carriger continues using her for subsequent books.No. I was not paid or anything for my review-I just REALLY love my new treasure in this book and new author.

I had higher expectations for this book, but found it a bit frustrating. I had thought that any romance in it was going to be more satirical of the genre (as it is what they usually devolve to), but when more than half the book was devoted to it, and what was said wasn't particularly exaggerated or satirical at all... then I can only assume that expectation was erroneous. Too many interactions and discussions about their attractions or romantic formalities, with scenes mainly reduced to, "Oh... a MAN! Tee hee!". While the main character initially states to believe the opposite (preferring a sense of independence and not caring for romance), the fact that she still eventually falls into those tropes undercut that initial character development. (Same issue I have with Pride and Prejudice)But I stuck through it as a fan of the supernatural elements. Some nice world - building in here, but the characters were lacking. Especially the main one, Miss Tarrabotti (whose name is said about 150 times per chapter... whatever happened to pronouns?). She just wasn't very active as a protagonist. Events simply happened to her, mostly out of coincidence, or from others pursuing her for whatever reason. Her presence at the climactic set piece came out of coincidence and thats just not interesting. I wanted her to be more actively investigating the events, after the first scene... but she basically stood back to try and act "proper". In the end, when another compliments her by saying, "you've proven to be a good investigator", I had to audibly exclaim out, "No... she didnt!" Because she didn't do much "investigating" at all... at best it was gossip with direct questions to her friends.But if you do like what is basically wish fulfillment romance from Victorian times, and some do... and need no more than that. (Which is fine... there's a lot of stuff i do like which also serves as wish fulfillment, too.) Then this might hit the spot for you. Just not for me.

To not put too fine a point on it, I absolutely adored Soulless! It is a smart, funny, sometimes sexy little morsel of steampunk romance brain candy. Now, first off, when you see the word "romance" in the description, please don't jump to the conclusion that I would have: that the book is chockablock with hot, steamy naughtiness. Now, in all honesty, it does have it's share of hot, steamy naughtiness (it is part romance when all is said and done, although it really has only one outright sex scene in the entire book), but it doesn't read like every action our heroine is taking is trying to lead her to her next tryst; this is Victorian England, after all, and there are certain rules and regulations one must follow before such scandalous behavior can ensue! What we have here, really, is a smart and sexy heroine who can not only hold her own against vampires and werewolves (she kills a vampire with her parasol, after all), but who can still manage to uphold the highest of societies standards and etiquette, often at the same time.Soulless is a clever book, and the notion of vampires, werewolves and ghosts being accepted parts of Victorian society is a unique approach to the urban fantasy. How our preternatural heroine, Alexia Tarabotti, falls into all this as someone without a soul who can negate the powers of the supernatural makes her all the more an extraordinary character. In fact, all of the characters are well polished gems and each stands out in their own distinct way.Carriger's writing is laugh-out-loud funny in some instances and solid throughout. I found it a refreshing read and a highly promising good start for this debut author. I'm anxiously awaiting the second in the series, Changeless.

By far the best book I have read for giving the reader a gut feel for day-to-day life and living conditions in 1850's Texas (and a bit of Mexico as well), including slavery as practiced in the state at the time. Interesting views and comments on the German settlers and settlements around San Antonio and their opposition to slavery. Olmstead has a brilliant mind but his writing is clear, modern and unassuming

I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this book. It takes you back to the 1850s before the Civil War and describes a trip the famous author and architect made through the Texas territory and into Mexico. Reading these original documents, especially by a good author like Olmsted, can give you much more detail and feeling for places and times.

I LOVED THE DETAIL THAT THE AUTHOR, FREDERICK OLMSTEAD, HAD IN THIS BOOK. HE SPOKE ABOUT THE WEATHER, THE COUNTRYSIDE , THE PEOPLE AND THEIR PERSONALITIES, AND THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS OF THE TIME. OLMSTEAD WAS MAKING THIS JOURNEY THROUGH TEXAS IN 1859 , BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF THE CIVIL WAR AND HE WROTE ABOUT SLAVERY AND IT'S EFFECT ON THE PEOPLE AND THE STATES IN WHICH IT EXISTED.MY FAVORITE PART OF THIS BOOK WAS WHEN OLMSTEAD VISITED THE LITTLE GERMAN TOWN OF NEW BRAUNFELS, TEXAS, WHICH HE LOVED AND BRAGGED ABOUT. I LOVED THIS PART BECAUSE I WAS BORN AND GREW UP IN NEW BRAUNFELS, BUT I TRULY ENJOYED ALL THE HISTORY IN THE ENTIRE BOOK.

The best book written about Texas that I have ever experienced. I marvel at the first hand accounts written by an educated man during his travels in and around the great State of Texas just before the start of the American Civil War. His express goal was to write about what he and his brother who went with him, found in Texas during about one year traveling by donkey and mule (and at times on foot) throughout all directions of the compass here in Texas. I can relate to his travels because I am a Texan born and raised these 61 fortunate years of my life here!! This same man later designed most of the official, government commissioned parks that are still part of our national, state and city heritage today (such as the Central Park in New York City). These parks were a response to heavy growth in and around the big cities in this country at the time, where people needed places to go in order to get a breath of fresh air and experience nature. He was a true blessing to our nation and left a wonderful contribution to Texas. The book was put together some ten years after the great man returned to the city from his travels in Texas. The book is made up of the seamless weaving together of numerous articles sent back to be published in a large magazine in the North as he traveled. He thought it a good thing to put all the articles in book form later and have them published. It was a really good idea. Another good idea he had was to use the articles and the book as a way to describe slavery in the South at the time. He was not in favor of slavery and I think his writing on the subject based on what he saw was fair and accurate. I think he did a remarkable job all the way around. This book is a fairly easy read and very enjoyable especially if you are familiar with the areas in which he and his brother traveled.

I loved this book. It is not politically correct, but it was written in 1850, after all. I've been in and through Texas many times, and I could see the landscape by his descriptions and ride along with him. Especially interesting was the contrast between the slave holders and the Germans. His stories of adventures (prairie fire, horses sinking in bogs) kept me hanging on, waiting for more.

After the Civil War Frederick Law Olmstead created the profession of landscape architect but in 1856 he was a journalist, sent by a New York newspaper to investigate and describe the newly annexed state of Texas. Olmstead was a northerner and against slavery but Texas was a slave state. He made a very long trip through the entire state and vividly describes the land and people, with a very sharp eye and skillful pen. A hundred different characters from all social classes come to life: slave owners, poor whites, German immigrants, Mexicans, natives. Olmstead pays close attention to economics: what kind of farming or ranching paid well in which areas, which ethnic group was thriving or sinking compared to others. He began his trip by taking the railroad across the Appalachins into Ohio, then proceeded by wagons and steamboats to New Orleans, and after that by horse and mule, several thousand miles in total. A fascinating book.

Mr. Olmstead has a wonderful prose style and is able to evoke the interesting period of Texas in the 1850's. Great descriptions of the land and people he and his companion meet during their horse pack trip. Very enjoyable read.

Olmsted is best when giving the reader his first-hand description of Texas in the 1850's. Unfortunately his prose is mired with endless self-absorbed opinions stemming from what must have been a deeply insecure fellow. He feels he must constantly remind us of his east coast blue blood status as only a would-be aristocrat can. Accounts of flora/fauna and indigenous people become frustratingly filtered through trite personal takes on literally everything and everyone Olmsted encounters. He does deserve merit for his anti-slavery stance; especially in light of the antebellum era in which he made his sojourn to Texas and Louisiana.
